Obituary for Cloyd Chaffin
Cloyd Chaffin, 86, of Victoria, Virginia, left us peacefully on October 18, 2024, surrounded by family and friends. God quietly whispered “Take your rest and your earthly mission is done”. A beloved husband, father and grandfather, Cloyd will always be remembered for his kindness and willingness to help others, even strangers.
Born on June 17, 1938, to the late Willie and Allie Jennings Chaffin, in Victoria, VA. He was the 9th child of 12 children, 2 sisters and 9 brothers. He was a graduate of Lunenburg High School, Class of 1956 in Victoria Virginia. After high school, he served in the United States Army and was Honorably Discharged as a Sergeant. Once released from the military he lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, then later moved to Baltimore, Maryland. He settled in Baltimore where he worked at Baltimore Gas and Electric, retiring after 38 years.
Cloyd met and married the love of his life, Cleo Eley. The two shared a love that lasted over 60 years and yielded three children, Theresa, Cloyd and Canio and two grandchildren, Ryan and Cameron.
While in Baltimore he joined Rising Sun Baptist Church under the direction of Emmitt Burns, Sr. and sang on the Male Chorus. After returning to Victoria, VA, he resumed his membership at Mount Olive Baptist Church.
After retirement he spent quality time with his wife, children, and grandchildren, which he truly enjoyed. Cloyd also spent time with his in laws, going to baseball games and visiting his second home in Virginia.
Cloyd was preceded in death by five brothers, Willie, LeaRoyal, Garfield, Russell and Davis Chaffin; two sisters, Eleanor Chaffin and Lillie Chaffin Haywood; five sisters-in-law, Sallie, Addie, Rosa, Mary and Francis.
He leaves to treasure his memories: his beloved wife, Cleo, daughter, Theresa Gregory, two sons, Cloyd “Collie” and Canio Chaffin (Melinda); two grandsons, Ryan Pettaway and Cameron Chaffin; all of Maryland, four brothers Eddie Chaffin, Sr. of Amelia, VA, Eugene Chaffin, Walter Chaffin (Donna), Wavly Chaffin (Louise), all of Victoria, VA; sisters-in-law, Marie Chaffin of Crewe, VA and Gloria Chaffin of Baltimore MD; goddaughters, Melinda Williams of NC; April Baynard of Louisburg, NC, and Vonda Colson of Baltimore, MD. Many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
