..Benjamin Thomas Murray, Jr. entered eternal rest on Monday, July 8, 2024. He was born in Richmond, Virginia to Benjamin Thomas Murray and Martha Frazier Murray Anderson on January 31, 1935. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Alease Ruffin Murray, his parents and stepparents, Grace Murray and Robert Edward Anderson, his sister, Doris Shepperson and brother Shirley (Richard) Bassett. “Ben, Jr.” as he was affectionately called attended Armstrong High School. He retired his position as a Forklift Driver from the State of Virginia ABC Board Warehouse where he worked for many years. At an early age he attended Shiloh Baptist Church, Richmond, VA.
His favorite place to visit during his youth and as an adult was Amelia County. He always told stories of the times he spent in the “country” with his grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins, and boy, did he have so many stories to tell. While attending Armstrong High School he played football and carried on his love for the sport as an adult. Ben enjoyed following the Virginia Union University Panthers football and basketball teams. He faithfully attended the games and enjoyed tailgating. He was a long-standing member of the VUU Panthers Booster Club and followed the teams to many of their in-state and out-of-state games before his health began to fail.
Ben leaves to cherish his memories: three sons Raymond O. Murray, Sr. (Laverne), Russell Lee Murray (Joyce), Benjamin T. Murray, III (Henryatta), and one daughter, Sandra R. Scott (Lynzra).
He has 6 grandchildren, 9 step-grandchildren, Raymond O. Murray, Jr; Shaunta Murray Johnson (Tremaine); Dr. Latisha Murray Royal (Dwayne); Raymone O. Murray; Tarnesha Murray, Benjamin T. Murray, IV and Katonia Wayde (Toby), Tiara and Tiona Epps, Travis and Alonzo Jones, Tremaine, Kerisha, and Tristan Scott and Matthew Clarke. Also leaves his great-grandchildren Diante Davis, JaNyia and LaRaya Murray, Tremaine Johnson, Jr, Kala, Mya, Arianna, Kari and Shyhiry Murray. Step great-grandchildren, Kiera Johnson, Laquisha, Tionna, Tyshawn and Wayde Toby Jr., Memet Keita, Salima Mujinga and Jean Mujinga.
Memories of Ben Jr. will also be cherished by his brother, Wayne Murray (Cathy) and one sister, Towanna Johnson (Calvin). He has three sisters-in-law Catherine Epps, Fannie Mae Carey, Patricia Ruffin and one brother-in-law, Andrew Ruffin (Evelyn). One very devoted cousin, friend and caretaker Earl Sutton, Jr., a.k.a. (Junie) and cousin Janice Sutton and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
