Obituary for Deacon Robert L. Harris
Deacon Robert Lee Harris, was born on July 25, 1942 to Emmett and Mary Young Harris.

Robert graduated from Luther Foster High School in 1961. He held several jobs throughout his life, including seventeen years at Levi Strauss and twenty-two years with the Lunenburg Public School System. He also served as a community leader whose services included twenty years of volunteering at WKLV Radio Station in Blackstone, VA. As he played the best in gospel music, he became known as the “Little Man of Gospel”. He often served as Master of Ceremony for many local programs.

At an early age he joined the New Prospect Baptist Church where he became a Deacon under the leadership of the late Reverend David Fitzgerald and continued to serve faithfully under Reverend Joseph A. Jones.

He was married to Edith Hurt Harris and to this union three children were born, Delores, Travis Sr. and Andre’.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents Emmett and Mary Harris; brothers Melvin and Lloyd; sister Lillian Etienne; nephew Timothy Moses; and son Michael.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his devoted wife Edith Hurt Harris of fifty-four years; children, Delores (Vernon) of Northern VA, Travis Sr. (Shandell) of Richmond, VA and Andre’ (Jennifer) of Palm Coast, FL; a host of grandchildren, nieces and nephews; an uncle, Eleazer Young of Baltimore, MD and a devoted uncle Peter Young of Blackstone, VA; sisters-n-law, Katherine Wynn (Norman) of Kenbridge, VA, Dorothy Coles of Kenbridge, VA, Christine Wilson (Robert) of Richmond, VA and Margaret Williams of Kenbridge, VA.

Funeral Service Friday, January 19, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. at New Prospect Baptist Church, Blackstone. Interment Harris Family Cemetery, Blackstone.
