Obituary for Herbert A. Hughes, Jr.
Herbert Annual Hughes, Jr. born to Herbert Hughes and the late Dorothy W. Hughes on May 24, 1963 in Blackstone, Virginia. He attended the Nottoway County Public Schools and graduated in 1981 from Nottoway High School. At a young age Herbert accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and joined the New Prospect Baptist Church, Blackstone, Virginia. Herbert was raised in a Christian home by his mother, Dorothy Hughes, and was active in the church, singing on the Junior Choir and Usher Board. He served in the New Prospect Baptist Church and later joined the Mt Zion Baptist Church Burkeville, Virginia. After High School graduation, Herbert relocated to Anchorage, Alaska where he lived and worked for a few years. Upon returning to his hometown, Blackstone, Herbert worked in Richmond, Virginia and married his first wife, Lisa Smith, and to that union two sons were born, Brian and Timothy. Later he would marry his second wife, Joy Annie Jackson. One son would be born from this union, Marcus. Herbert had an inquiring mind that pursued many questions for answers. His search for deeper understanding led him on many paths in life. He would often acknowledge how grateful he was to have had a solid foundation established by his mother. Even though Herbert would candidly confess that he did not always follow or apply the biblical teaching he was taught, his life journey would eventually lead him back to God through Jesus Christ. His search for a deeper understanding and a closeness with God would be evidence through his strong desire sitting under the Holy Word.
Herbert loved his children and grandchildren. He was intentional about spending quality time with his children and grandchildren. Herbert valued precious time with family and encouraged family togetherness as much as possible. Herbert was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Hughes. His memories will be cherished by his family.
