Obituary for Darryl B. Gilbert
Our beloved Darryl Bernard Gilbert Sr. entered eternal rest on Friday, December 24, 2021.

Darryl was born January 13, 1968 to Diane Gilbert (deceased) and Horace Minor of Huntsville, TX.

Darryl was an outstanding athlete who shined on the football field as #11 of the Huntsville Hornets. After graduating from Huntsville High School in 1986, Darryl joined the U.S. Navy, where he met his wife and started his family while stationed at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Virginia. He went on to serve at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD; Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC; Naval Air Station Pensacola in Pensacola, FL; the Naval School of Health Science in Portsmouth, VA and the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) at Fort Lee, VA. Darryl retired after 20 years of stellar service as a U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman FMF.

Darryl’s quest for knowledge was endless and he was committed to lifelong learning. He was an avid reader who enjoyed the works of Walter Mosley, Robert Jordan and Tom Clancy. He enjoyed playing softball, fishing, golfing, and had most recently taken up gardening. On any given Sunday, Darryl could be found grilling up real Texas barbecue and cheering on the greatest football team of all time; the Dallas Cowboys.

Darryl was extremely proud of where he came from, as he would not let you forget he was a Texas boy at heart. He was an outspoken, strong-willed, family oriented man whose tough love and wisdom prepared his family for life’s trials and tribulations.

Darryl Bernard Gilbert Sr. leaves to cherish his beloved memories: his devoted wife of 33 years, Pauline Gilbert of Petersburg, VA; son Darryl Bernard Gilbert Jr. of Petersburg, VA; daughter Erica Taylor and son-in-law Kevin Taylor of Henrico, VA; grandchildren Samir, Skye, and Yree Taylor; father Horace Minor, brother Kelton Gilbert of Connecticut, sister Rosheque Gilbert of Florida, three nephews, one niece, and a host of beloved family in Texas.

Viewing Friday, December 31, 2021 from 12 to 7PM.

Funeral Services Saturday, January 1, 2022 at 2:00PM at Hawkes Funeral Home, Blackstone. Interment Northside Cemetery, Huntsville, TX.
