Obituary for Shirley M Stith
Shirley, better known as Maxine, was born on September 26, 1957. The eldest of six, Maxine was quiet and stayed mostly to herself. If you looked around her childhood home, you could always find her in a corner and there she sat with a book in hand. Her love to read continued with her into her adulthood. Maxine began her education in the Amelia County School system. She later furthered her academic endeavours at several accredited schools which include the University of Phoenix, where she received a Master’s in Science. Though quiet and reserved in disposition, she made her way through the ranks of nursing starting out as an LPN and ultimately became an RN as well as supervising her unit at Piedmont Geriatric Hospital in Nottoway County.

During a chance encounter with a family friend, she met and then later wed William Stith Jr., (Champ) and they made a family and life together in Crewe, Virginia. Through meeting Champ, which seemed to be instant love, Maxine seemed to blossom into not only a budding wife and mother, but a true force to be reckoned with. From quiet beginnings to being the voice for so many, whether family, friend or one of her lively patients, Maxine stood as a beacon for determination, hope and strength.

No matter who you were, if you were lucky enough to meet her, she always spoke her mind. Even in her off time, she enjoyed watching documentaries about medicine and surgery. When that wasn’t the case Sci-Fi was her fix. Star Trek was a fan favorite in the Stith home. And even when facing health concerns, Maxine continued to be that source of hope and strength. As usual when she made her mind up about any situation, that was just it. The doctors would say one thing, and with God’s will Maxine would show them otherwise. With a strong belief in God and an equally strong family dynamic, Maxine made her life choices with that in mind. She will forever be remembered as that same beacon of hope, love, and strength.

Shirley Maxine Stith made her final transition on August 12, 2021, into the arms of her Father in Heaven. With God’s will and her own personal determination, she fought for years with many triumphs. Shirley is survived by her parents Samuel & Cora Rice, her husband William Samuel Stith Jr.; her children, daughter Latasha Jenkins (Dwain Jr.), sons William Samuel Stith III and Justin Colby Stith (fiancé Marcia Mundy); grandchildren Morgan Aniyah Oakley, Taylor Elise Jenkins, Justin Colby Stith Jr., and Dwain Jenkins III.
