Obituary for Earnest W. Gray
Earnest Wendell Gray peacefully transitioned from labor to reward at Johnston Willis Hospital on the evening of July 9, 2021. Earnest was born on September 22, 1956 to the late Phillip Thomas Gray and survived by his mother Cloris Kee Jennings Gray in Crewe, VA. He was the fourth child out of seven children.
Earnest attended Nottoway County Public School Systems and graduated with the Class of 1977. After graduation, Earnest worked at Heritage Hall as a male Orderly until declining health. During his school tenure he was actively involved in music, clubs and the drama department. Earnest joined the Fourth Mt. Zion Baptist Church at an early age. His parents instilled in him the importance of keeping God first. Earnest knew the Lord and would speak of his goodness.
Earnest was affectionately known throughout the community as he would stop and talk to everyone he meets. Earnest knew no stranger. He was also known to be one of the best dressed around the block. When engaging with Earnest in conversation, he would always respond with a “Say What”! when you ask him how he was doing, and he was always cooling it. Earnest’s spirit, personality, warm smile and love for others will definitely be missed.
Earnest leaves behind his mother, Cloris (Kitten) Gray, two brothers Milton Gray (Gloria) of Crewe, VA, Phillip Gray (Janice) of Ford, VA; four sisters Vanessa Green of Charlotte Court House, VA, Gwendolyn Ward (Joe) of Crewe, VA, Delores Mitchell (Frank) of Crewe, VA and Rev. Jacqueline Hawkes of Blackstone, Va. He survived by three aunts Lavada Pines of Washington, DC, Margaret Knight of Crewe, VA and Eunice Jackson of Crewe, Va. Earnest had many nieces, nephews and cousins. He had numerous friends at Magnolia Place in the community and devoted friends, Mr. & Mrs. Jim Hasbrouck. The family would like to give a special thanks to his care giver Ms. Joanne.
