Obituary for Lelia Ann Hicks
On Tuesday, April 6, 2021, God saw he needed another rose for his spring garden and called home his child, Lelia Ann Hicks, as she laid resting at the Amelia Nursing Home. Lelia was born on December 31, 1927, to Joel G. Booker and Alice Gibson Booker.
As a young girl, Lelia moved to Powhatan, VA to live with her grandmother in the Fine Creek Community. She attended the Fine Creek School and joined the St. James Baptist Church at an early age, where she attended until marriage.Â
On August 27, 1948, Lelia was joined in holy wedlock to James Robert Hicks, Sr. From this union three children were born, Shirley, James Jr. and Celestine. After marriage Lelia moved to the Macon community and there she was affiliated with the Pine Hill Baptist Church until her health declined.
Lelia was a very friendly and fun loving person, who loved to go fishing with her Aunt Dorothy and Uncle Thurston Norman. She also did domestic work for various families in the Bon Air and Powhatan areas.
Lelia was preceded in death by her parents, Joel and Alice Booker; her husband, James Hicks, Sr.; and son, James Hicks, Jr. To carry on her memory she leaves two loving daughters, Shirley Royal (Harry) and Celestine Yates (Calvin); one granddaughter, Katina Woolridge; one great grandson, Marcel Providence (Candice); two great-great grandchildren, Laveyah and Grayson; loving and devoted cousin, Lorene Gibson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friend, Caroline Clements.
