Obituary for Alfred V. Tucker
Deacon Alfred Vincent Tucker, son of Jean Tucker Willis and Richard Emmanuel Tucker, and stepson of Kenneth Norman Willis was born on September 27, 1951, in Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn, NY. Alfred was called to eternal rest on Friday, January 29, 2021, at St. Francis Hospital in Richmond, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Jean Tucker Willis, stepfather, Kenneth N. Willis, maternal grandparents, William Louis Ingram and Sarah Winston Ingram; paternal grandparents, Richard E. and Mildred Tucker; and stepdaughter, Feron Lewis.
Alfred married Mattie Walker and assisted in raising his step daughters Feron Lewis and Valerie Lewis Bowles as well as a granddaughter, Anitra Lewis, whom he loved and adored.
Alfred graduated from Luther H. Foster High School (Now Nottoway Senior High) in 1970 which was the last graduating class before the name change to Nottoway Senior High.
Alfred was baptized at Shiloh Baptist Church at an early age under the leadership of Rev. David E. Gordon. He has always been a hard working member of Shiloh while growing up as well as in adulthood. He faithfully attended Sunday School and church. He served in many roles throughout his years in Shiloh. In addition to other roles of service, one of his last was Chairman of the Deacon Board until his death. He had previously served in that role before and stepped up again even though his health was not good. He not only served at Shiloh, but attended and served when asked in numerous other churches.
Alfred was a member of W.H. Hughes #79 Masonic Lodge in Blackstone, VA where he was a Past Worshipful Master. He served on the Blackstone Town Council from July 2002 to June 2018 and was honored by the Town of Blackstone for his service. He was the one that helped make the ward system possible for serving on the brown council. He was one of seven plaintiffs in a 1985 Voting Rights suit that led to the establishment of Blackstone’s present system in which two members of Council are elected at-large and five elected in wards, three of which must have black majorities, according to the judge’s order. He was known by the Council as “a soft spoken humble leader with strong faith in God.” He was responsible for several upgrades in his ward, to include - upgrading of the baseball field and community center, removal of asbestos from the Memorial Center as well as many other accomplishments in his ward.
Alfred was a jack of all trades. If it was broken, he could fix it. He didn’t believe in throwing anything away. He would make something useful out of things most people wouldn’t think of keeping.
He graduated from Southside Community College in Alberta with a degree in Electronics. He worked at Sheffield TV and Appliances for a number of years; Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company in Petersburg, VA until it closed. Following that assignment, he was employed by Nottoway Correctional Center where he served as Sergeant before being promoted to work center, until he was injured by a car in 2008, while he was being the good Samaritan he has always exemplified. He was assisting a motorist on the side of the highway when he was hit by another driver. Regardless of the struggle, he relied on his faith in God and was never bitter about his fate. He remained dedicated to being independent and still caring for the needs of others whether it was family, church members, town citizens or friends.
He leaves to cherish his memories: three devoted sisters, Mildred Tucker of South Chesterfield, VA, Sandra Tucker Jones of Blackstone, and Carolyn Willis Jackson (Henry) of Amelia, VA; three step brothers - Kenneth Willis, Jr. and Marshall Willis of Baltimore, Maryland, Warren Willis of Philadelphia, PA; 5 step sisters - Gloria Howard of Santa Anna, CA, Sarah George of Baltimore, Paulette Richardson of Glen Burnie, MD, Barbara Brown of Wilson, Va. and Kathy Johnson of Smithfield, VA.; step daughter - Valerie L. Bowles (Kemsy) of Prospect, VA; granddaughters - Anitra Lewis of Brunswick, VA and Kimani Lewis of Prospect; grandsons - Jaquez and Ty’jon; one uncle - Henry May (June) of New York; nieces and nephews- Kevin Tucker (Bobbie), Sr., Ebony Jackson, Jasmine Tucker, Jack Jones, III, Cedric Jackson, Jaylen Jackson; great nephews and nieces - Kevin Tucker, Jr., devoted Christopher R. Tucker, Kiania S. Tucker and a host of cousins - one devoted - Francis Tucker (Ben) and other relatives. Also a host of many friends - among them - Ernest Hawkes, special friend -- Sandra Knight - her daughter, Kim Williams (Maurice) and grandson - Andrew Sommerville; Caretakers - Laura Lee Fowlkes and Moses Bowden. We are thankful to St. Francis Medical Center doctors, clergy and staff for the care and concern given to our loved one.
Funeral Services Saturday, February 6, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Shiloh Baptist Church, Blackstone. Interment Greenview Cemetery, Blackstone.
