Obituary for Lucille Virginia Turner
At the age of 94, Lucille Virginia Turner of Blackstone, VA, departed this life to go
home to be with her heavenly father on Thursday, June 15, 2017 in the Burke Health
and Rehabilitation Center in Burke, VA.
Lucille was born in Nottoway, VA on March 14, 1923 to the late Godfrey and
Victoria Hawkes. She joined Cedar Hill Baptist Church at an early age and was a
faithful member of the following ministries: Ushers, Choir, Willing Workers,
Sunday School and Women’s ministries. She also served as the Financial Secretary
of the Church for many years. She was an active member of these ministries until
her health would not allow her to continue.
She graduated from Nottoway Training School and began her career at Camp
Pickett, VA where she met James H. Turner and they were married on May 4, 1946.
They were blessed with three daughters. The couple endeavored to be entrepreneurs
and started a business known as “Acme Bar-B-Que” which was well known
in the community and is still remembered today for its great food. After the death
of her husband, she was employed at Peebles Department Store in Blackstone and
retired after 24 years of service.
She enjoyed sewing, cooking and fellowshipping with people. She and her husband
always had an “open door” to their home for friends and family. She was also
actively involved in the Jolly Social Club where she participated in many
community projects to help others in need.
To cherish her memory, she is survived by three devoted daughters and sons-in-love,
Mrs. Berthell Epes (Warren), Mrs. Loretta Miller (Carlton) and Mrs. Linda
Hines (Vick); 6 grandchildren Twan (MeLisa), Marcus (LaMisha), Latrice (Jamar),
Latosha, Carla (Keith), Christina; 5 great-grandchildren Kalief, Cayla, Teacora,
Jayden and Jordan. She was preceded in death by 3 sisters and 1 brother,
Catherine (Harry), Lafayette (Lobelia), Henrietta (Joe) and Frances (James). She
was well loved by her 5 nieces and 2 nephews, Stanley, Alice, Charlotte, Rose,
Joanne, Vickie and Harry and a host of family and friends. She had two devoted
friends that were like sisters, Barbara Tucker and Barbara Jones.
The loving memories of our Mother will be everlasting and her legacy will live on
through her family and everyone she touched.
The family will visit with friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m.
Funeral Services will be Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Cedar Hill Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.
