Obituary for John S. Thompkins, Sr.
God in His infinite wisdom dispatched his angels to bring home one of his cherished and unique children, John S. Thompkins, Sr. affectionately known as “Johnny Ringo” on March 5, 2020 as he rested peacefully within his home surrounded by family and friends. He was born in Amelia, Virginia on May 9, 1955 to the late Edward and Elizabeth Thompkins.

John accepted Christ at an early age and was educated in Amelia County Public Schools. He was employed with Alleghany Warehouse as a Machine Operator for over 30 years.

He was born with an undeniable love for horses that was stronger than you can even imagined. He started riding at a very early age, and soon was able to manage his very own horse named “King”. Far and near, John has played a vital part in the training of many horses, as well as trained all that were interested in learning to ride horses. John could enthusiastically tell you about horses from the beginning to the end, from how to raise them, feed them and what to buy for them. John was able to participate in many trail rides, Christmas parades, church events and birthday parties. He started his first horse club “The Rough Riders” in the early 1980s. John was also a member of The Outlaws and Happy Trail Riders. He was often found riding and active in the works of B&J Stables. He would often leave a conversation advising. “I got to get home and feed my babies”. John’s love for horses inspired many of his friends to take his particular fashion, prompting many of them to sport cowboy boots and hats.”

John was proceeded in death by five brothers; Walter, Ralph, James, Orbin and Bobby. He leaves to cherish his fond memories and love, his wife Jocelyn of 31 years; his children, Quentina “Scoop” Thompkins of Colonial Heights, VA, John Jr. and Shawn (Dominique) Thompkins of Amelia, VA; seven grandchildren, Vidal “Dajon” Thompkins, JaQuory Person, Khale Thompkins, Jared Glasgow, Jade Glasgow, LaShawn Thompkins and Shawn Thompkins, Jr. God-daughter Ka’Nyrha Thompson; sister Ethel Thompkins of Richmond, VA, one brother Benjamin Thompkins (Hattie) of Amelia, VA; three sisters-in-law, Rebecca Thompson of Heathsville, VA, Lois Mondrey (William) and Eva Anderson all of Amelia; brother-in-law Edward Anderson, Jr. of Amelia, VA; five aunts Murriel Davis of Delaware, Jean Irvine of Philadelphia, PA, Gloria Walker of Los Angles, CA, Renee Jones of Williamsburg, VA and Irene Ranson of Richmond, VA; and one uncle Elder Alonzo Jones (Barbara) of Chesterfield, VA. Additionally, close to his heart John took in a few young ladies as his own, Brittany Monroe, Ashley Watson, Kiandra Nash, Shaira Nash and Kayla Harris and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
