Obituary for William M. Stokes
William Milton Stokes, son of the late Willie and Celia Jones Stokes was born May 17, 1933 in Piney Green, Nottoway County, Virginia. He was blessed with wings on Monday, September 12, 2016 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.
William was baptized at a young age. He attended school in Nottoway County, Virginia. He later enlisted in the United States Army and served from December 1950-1953. He fought during the Korean War and received an Honorable Discharge as a Corporal.
William married his devoted wife Delores Anita Butler in 1960 and they continued to live in Baltimore, Maryland while working at Sparrows Point Shipyard. In 1973 they relocated to Blackstone, Virginia with their children. William retired from Nottoway Correction Center Boiler Plant.
William was a member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church where he was an active member of the Usher Board, Men’s Ministry and Sunday School. He was well known for is famous homemade ice cream at church functions, and also for his delightful and pleasant conversations.
William gained his wings upon death to be reunited with his parents, Willie and Celia Stokes; his wife, Delores A. Stokes; his three sons, Ulysses, Cecil and Wayne; his five brothers, Franklin, Alfred, Lawrence, Linwood and Alvin Stokes; his three sisters, Margaret Corprew, Elizabeth Williams and Lucille Stokes; his son-in-law, John A. Carroll III. He leaves the celebration of his legacy to his three daughters, Tanya Carroll of Baltimore, Maryland, Shontael Stokes of Warner Robins, Georgia and Yvonne Bartee of Richmond, Virginia; three sons, Tyrone Butler of Baltimore, Maryland, Anthony Stokes of Kenbridge, Virginia and DeMarcus (Samantha) Stokes of Buckingham, Virginia; two brothers, Richard Stokes of Baltimore, Maryland and James Stokes of Norfolk, Virginia; two sisters-in-law, Eunice Edwards and Audrey Stokes of Baltimore, Maryland; grandchildren; great grandchildren; the many children he fostered through his lifetime; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family will visit with friends Friday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church where
services will be held Saturday, September 17, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, Blackstone. Interment church cemetery.
