Obituary for Clarence "Hambone" Smith
Clarence “Hambone” Smith, 69 peacefully and victoriously slipped away from all pain and suffering on Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at Centra Southside Hospital in Farmville, VA. Clarence was born in Dinwiddie County on October 13, 1950 to the union of Alice Jackson Smith and the late Deacon John Edward Smith.
“Hambone” accepted Christ at an early age at the First Baptist Church in McKenney, VA and later in life joined the Shiloh Baptist Church of Dinwiddie under the leadership of Reverend David L. Banks, Sr. Here he planted his spiritual roots deep in the good soil of the word of God and began to flourish spiritually. “Hambone” became one of the “Project Overseers” until his health began to decline. He could be counted on to come, sit, watch and make sure “The Project” was going according to his specifications.
“Hambone” was an avid sports player and fan, who also loved to fish and hunt. He was a member of the Westside Hunt Club; holding the office of vice-president until his death. He was known as “Slackman” to the CB world. He served his country in the United States Army, where he completed his education and also served in the United States Army Reserve.
He retired after thirty-five years of service with the Virginia Department of Transportation as a heavy equipment operator. He then went to work as a truck driver with Edmunds Transportation until his health began to decline. Upon full retirement, he joined the McDonalds’ Bunch in Blackstone. The McDonalds’ Bunch is a group of regular morning customers made up of God’s children who love their heavenly Father and earthly brothers and sisters. They are willing to be a blessing to each other and anyone needing a helping hand.
“Hambone” is survived by his devoted wife of twenty-nine years, Alma Fowlkes Smith; one son, George “Tommy” Curtis of Independence, VA; mother, Alice “Mickey” Smith of McKenney; five brothers, Kerry Smith of Petersburg, Keith Smith of Richmond, Dwayne Smith (Faith) of Prince George, Elgin Smith (Judy) of Chesterfield, and Frederick Smith (Dorothea) of Petersburg; one sister, Deacon Vanessa Pegram (Gary) of Petersburg and one foster sister/cousin, Dorethia Guyton (Ron) of Chicago, IL; one sister-in-law, Mary Jackson Hill (Gary) of Hanover; four aunts, Mary Alston, Dora Jackson, Annie Coleman of McKenney and Ruth Davidson of Chicago, IL; three uncles, Joseph and Arthur Jackson of New Jersey and Herbert Smith (Helen) of California; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins (four special and devoted, Ruth, Shelia, Cassondre’ and Robert “Peter”) and friends too numerous to list that touched his life daily.
He never met a stranger and was a willing helper to all!
