Obituary for Lee R. Hawkes
Lee Royal Hawkes, “Leroy” was a resident of Dinwiddie County, departed this life on May 2, 2012 in Hampton, Virginia after a declining illness.
He was born May 18, 1940 in Dinwiddie County to the late Richard H. Sr. and Rosa Mae Hawkes. He attended schools in Dinwiddie County and joined Shiloh Baptist Church at an early age. He retired as a Welding Supervisor after 34 years of service from Newport News Shipbuilding.
Leroy was married to the late Yvonne H. Hawkes on May 21, 1960 and to this union they had seven children. He was preceded in death by infant twin daughters, a son, Leroy Jr. and a brother Clifton P. Hawkes.
He leaves to mourn: four devoted children, a son Gary Hawkes of Hampton, VA, daughters, Chandra Clark (Michael Sr.) of Hampton, VA, Angelia Saunders of Bristow, VA and Charlene Johnson (Lewis) of Blackstone, VA; eight grandchildren, Mikie, Chantel, Durrell, Chanel, Darius, Brandon, Justin and Brianna; one god son, Stefon; brothers, Clinton Hawkes (Annette), Ernest Ray Hawkes (Edith), Macktoy Hawkes (Juanita) all of Blackstone, VA and Richard H. Hawkes, Jr. (Carrie) of Warsaw, VA ; five aunts Emma Pearce, Mary Groves and Gloserine Bradsher of MD and Martha Bridgeforth, Arlene Mikeal of Blackstone, VA; two uncles Earl Taylor, Jr. and Arthur Jackson of Blackstone, VA, father- in- law, Webster Hawkes, two sister- in- laws, Theresa Williams (Ralph) and Debbie Lee (James); three brother-in-laws, Kermit Hawkes (Lucy), Alton Hawkes and Darrell Hawkes (Lisa); loving companion Mabel Davis, a long time best friend Colonel “Billy” Hobbs and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral Services Monday, May 7, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church, Dinwiddie with interment in the Poplar Lawn Baptist Church Cemetery, Blackstone.
