Obituary for Elizabeth L. Williams
On June 6th 1925, Elizabeth Lillian was the third of eleven children born to the late Willie and Cecelia Stokes in Piney Green, Nottoway County, Virginia. She made the
transition from earth to heaven on January 6, 2015.  Lil’, as she was affectionately called, accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at an early age. She was baptized in a creek near Mt. Nebo Baptist Church. Elizabeth always tried to do things God’s way, forgiving and being forgiven. Even as a child Elizabeth had one desire, to help those in need by sharing her blessings. In 1946 she moved to Baltimore, Maryland with her Great-Uncle, Algie Williams. There Elizabeth met Paul Alston Jr. and created one daughter, Mary. They both provided Mary with love and guidance. Their friendship continued for 50 years until his death in 1997.Â

Elizabeth joined Faith Baptist Church under Dr. Simon Williamson and became active in the Sunday school ministry. Always frugal, tithing, saving, sacrificing, her greatest joy was in finding creative ways to help others. With a deep faith in God, she rose long before daylight, worked hard at numerous full time, and some part-time jobs to care for Mary. In 1958, she met and married Hollis Williams (deceased). Her little row house on Collington Ave. welcomed many family members and friends.Â

February 9, 1992 Elizabeth joined Community Baptist Church under Christian experience from Fountain Baptist Church. She was a member of the Courtesy Guild for a short time. Under the leadership of Pastor Robert T. Hurte, Elizabeth proudly served as a member of the United Baptist Missionary Convention (UMBC) Choir. Her fondest memories were singing at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall.Â

A lover of books, Elizabeth received her early education in Nottoway Training Center in Virginia. Later, she acquired her high school GED as part of the OIC program in Baltimore. Elizabeth retired from the US Postal Service after many long nights as a clerk. Her later years were spent on Darien Rd. surrounded by the flowers that she loved tending. She met new neighbors who became loving friends. Sickness slowed her footsteps; nevertheless she remained strong in the Lord, a true missionary. She relentlessly taught others by example that the key to spiritual and financial success in life begins and ends with a genuine relationship with God. Erika, her 1st great-grandchild dubbed her Grannie and the other little ones followed suit. Before cancer weakened her body, she enjoyed driving her own car well into her 80’s. Known as Lil’, Sis, Liz’, Mrs. Williams, Miss Elizabeth, Cuz’, Auntie, friend, Momma, Grandma, and Grannie, and a child of the King…

Preceding her in death were her sister, Margaret Corprew (by 1 day), her brothers Alvin, Linwood, Lawrence, Alfred, and Franklin Stokes.

Cherishing precious memories: Elizabeth leaves her daughter Mary Elizabeth (Alston) Paschall and son-in-law Earl Paschall; her granddaughters Patrise (Paschall) Shields and Chiana (Paschall) Sanderson, grandsons-in-law Gregory Shields and Shawn Sanderson, six great-grandchildren Erika and Erin Shields; Ariana, Joshua, Jaylen and Alexia Sanderson; her Aunt, Dorothy Davis of Richmond, Virginia; her sister Lucille Stokes of Baltimore, Maryland her brothers James Stokes of Norfolk, Virginia, William Stokes of Blackstone, Virginia; and Richard Stokes of Baltimore, Maryland.Â

Some of her closest friends until the end were Joyce Ross of Zion Baptist, Glenda Wilson, Louise Streeter, Martha Woodson, Lillian Alston Gladden, and Dr. Agnes Callum.Â
