Obituary for Bertha L. Davis
Bertha Louise Goode Davis, fondly known as “Aunt Bert”, “Cousin Bert” or “Bert” to her family and friends, departed this life to her heavenly Father on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at the VCU Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill, VA after a lengthy illness.  She was a resident of Heritage Hall Nursing Home from April 2014 until her recent hospitalization and passing.
Bertha, daughter of the late Johnnie A. Goode and Hattie M. Goode was born on January 3, 1930, the fourth of five children.  Siblings, Nellie Mae Goode, Justine Goode Hall, Doris Goode Tucker and James A. Goode, Sr., all preceded her in death.
She was employed for many years with hospitals in the state of Virginia, namely Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, VA, Piedmont Hospital in Nottoway County and Central State Hospital in Petersburg, VA where she retired after thirty plus years as a nurses aide.
On December 23, 1948 she was joined in holy matrimony to Percy Holmes.  Percy passed away while serving his country in the United States Armed Forces which left Bertha a widow.  Some years later, she met and married Tom Davis, who also served in the United States Armed Forces and unfortunately lost his life during war time.
Bertha was educated in Nottoway County Schools.  At an early age she was baptized and accepted Christ as her Savior at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Blackstone, VA where she participated faithfully in Sunday School, and sang on the Junior and Senior Choir for many years.  She also was a member of the Blackstone Community Chorus.  Several church organizations that she served on included, the Missionary Ministry and Dorcas Circle.  In 1995 she was consecrated as a Deaconess.  Bertha loved the Lord and she especially loved her church.  She served diligently for many years and through several serving Pastors until her health failed.  Even then, Bertha still managed to support her church through stewardship.
Bertha loved to sing and tell everyone about the goodness of God.  There weren’t many Sundays at Shiloh that you wouldn’t hear her shout those glorious words as only she could, “My My My” ringing from the pew.  There’s not one member of her family that never got a good talking to from her all while learning the lessons of a wise woman.  She would say “Don’t say I didn’t tell you”.  In the midst of her talks and lessons she never fell short on making you laugh either.  We will all miss her stories from way back and all the family history that she shared.  A stern woman she was with a unique personality that was filled with the Holy Spirit of God.  She loved flowers and took pride in gardening in her yard when her health allowed.
She leaves to cherish her fondest memories of love:  one sister-in-law, Mary T. Goode of Blackstone, VA; nieces, Mary-Lou Clowney of New Jersey, Velma G. Thompson of Crewe, VA; nephews Tyrone N. Tucker, Sr. (devoted); Francis “Ben” Tucker (devoted), Harold M. (Boogie) Tucker and James A. Goode, Jr. (Vanessa), all of Blackstone, VA; great nieces: Kim Tucker Marshall (devoted), of Petersburg, VA; Kei Thornton, Kamell Goode, Tiana Tucker all of Blackstone, VA and Romesia Thompson of Petersburg, VA; great nephews: Gary (Veronica) Crawley of Henrico, VA, Tyrone (Sherry) N. Tucker Jr., Kelly Tucker of Richmond, VA, Dwayne (Suzanne) Tucker of Blackstone, VA and DaRome (April) Thompson of Crewe, VA; a third and fourth generation of nieces and nephews; a host of cousins, three dearly devoted, Sandra T. Jones of Blackstone, VA, Mildred D. Tucker of Petersburg, VA and Gloria Frost of Blackstone, VA; very close and dear cousin Flora Booth of Blackstone, VA; goddaughters, Bess Hardy, Keisha Hardy of Blackstone, VA and Christian Hardy of Richmond, VA; loving lifetime friends, Mary W. Porter of Chicago, IL, Virginia Sears of Williamsburg, VA and Esther Fitzgerald of Blackstone, VA; and the fond nursing staff at Heritage Hall Nursing Home, many other relatives, associates and friends.
