Obituary for William A. Parker, Jr.
William Andrew Parker, Jr. departed this life on June 12, 2015 at Lynchburg General Hospital in Lynchburg, VA. He was born on September 23, 1953 to Martha Oliver Parker and William A. Parker, Sr. in Crewe, VA.
He was educated in Nottoway County Public Schools. He joined Union Baptist Church at an early age and later served as a Sunday School teacher.
He was affectionately known as “Big Man” by close friends and family members, and associates as “Parker”, “Smoky”, and “Dr. Soul”.
He was preceded in death by: his father William, Sr. and two sisters Constance “Friss” Johnson and Kate “Jackie” Knight.
Over the years he has been employed by Velvet Textile, Wilkerson Tire Company, and Kentucky Fried Chicken.
He loved to enjoy life, having a good time and making everyone laugh. In the 70’s and 80’s, he played Bass Guitar in a local band called “The Soul Shakers” with several close friends and relatives that was managed by his uncle Lee Roy. They played at local clubs and in Victoria, VA. He enjoyed playing baseball and soft ball while in high school and on local community teams during the 70’s and 80’s. He played as an outfielder with the Burkeville All Stars baseball team. Manager and Coach Harvey Lee Branch spoke of “Big Man” as being a “very dedicated player—one of the first to always show up”. Big Man later became the manager and pitcher of Downs Electronics Soft Ball Team and scheduled ball games with local teams in surrounding cities. He was an early riser every morning and he loved to call Moma at 5 AM or calling her name at her bedroom window to make sure she was OK.
William leaves to cherish his memory: his mother Martha “Queen” Parker; sister Cynthia M. (Stanley) Ball of Columbus, OH; brother Aubrey (Billy) Parker of Crewe, VA; brother-in-law Matthew Knight, Sr. of Amelia, VA; four aunts, two uncles, a host of nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces, great-great nieces, great-great nephews, cousins, other friends and associates.
