Obituary for Velma L. Jeffries
VELMA LAVERN RATHER JEFFRIES, affectionately known as “Baby Sally” or “Baby Sis” entered into eternal rest on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at Southside Community Hospital in Farmville, VA. Daughter of the late Woodrow and Carrie Shelton Rather, she was born on August 22, 1948. one brother William (Archie) preceded her in death.
Velma was educated in the Nottoway County public schools and graduated from Luther H. Foster High School with the class of 1968. At a very early age she joined the Union Baptist Church. In later years she became president of the Mass Choir until her health failed. She was also a faithful member of the Nottoway Gospel Ensemble and a member of the Women’s Ministry.
Velma worked various jobs for many years and was a faithful babysitter for many families in Woodlake.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her loving and devoted husband Rufus; two sons, Milton (Melinda) and Ronald (Christeller) Robertson; one stepdaughter, Lillie Louise Jeffries; three brothers, Douglas of Baltimore, MD, Earl (Brenda) of Crewe, VA and Clarence of Baltimore, MD; eleven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one aunt, Ollie Rather of Baltimore, MD; one goddaughter, Terrell Epps; ten sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; a number of nieces and nephews; her devoted friends, Mr. & Mrs. John Goode of Amelia, VA; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at Union Baptist Church, Crewe with interment in the Rather Family Cemetery, Crewe.
