Obituary for Vanessa Worsham Coles
VANESSA DELORES WORSHAM COLES, daughter of the late Thomas and Mamie Worsham, was born October 12, 1953 in Amelia, VA and departed this life June 18, 2008 in Gastonia, NC. At an early age, Vanessa accepted Christ and joined Manassa Hill Baptist Church. She attended Amelia County Public Schools and was a member of the graduating class of 1972. On July 12, 1980, she was united in marriage to William Coles and two children were born to this union.
Vanessa began her teaching career in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System immediately after graduation from Johnson C. Smith University in 1976. Believing “Every child can reach their maximum potential with proper assistance and guidance”, over the years Vanessa was chosen “Teacher of the Year” and received numerous awards for outstanding service and dedication to her students. She was a mentor to many young educators. After thirty years, Vanessa retired from Merry Oaks Elementary School in 2006.
Vanessa was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Charlotte chapter of Johnson C. Smith University Alumni Association, where she was elected queen in 1980. She and her family also attended Mount Carmel Baptist Church.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her husband, William Coles; her loving and devoted children, Krystle and Jalan Coles; three sisters, Mary W. Jackson, Edith L. Worsham and Sherri W. Vaughan; four brothers, Thomas “Sonny” Worsham, Ernest Daniel Worsham, William Nathaniel Worsham and Clifton Randolph Worsham; one brother-in-law, Johnny Coles; four sisters-in-law, Gwendolyn Worsham, Katie Worsham, Marcia Worsham and Connie Coles; a devoted cousin and friend, Sharon Coles-Mongo; goddaughter, Tytiana Mongo; three aunts, Annie Claiborne, Louise T. Worsham and Annie Mae Worsham; two uncles, Hugo Worsham and Ernest Hawkes; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral Services Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Manassa Hill Baptist Church, Amelia with interment in the church cemetery.
