Obituary for Tom Sam Rhoades
Tom Sam Rhoades departed this life on January 1, 2015 at St. Francis Medical Center in Midlothian, Virginia. Son of the late Samuel and Minnie Rhoades, he was born August 18, 1924.
At an early age he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and joined Springhill Baptist Church. He was an active member until his illness. Mr. Rhoades served various capacities, to name a few: member of Deacon Board; Superintendent of Sunday School; director of transportation and driver for the Sunday School and Youth Department; director of Vacation Bible School; member of the Christian Education Board; member of the Community Bible Study; president of Pastor’s Aid; president of the Combined Choir; president of the Senior Choir; member of the Harris-Watkins Memorial Choir; member of the Inspirational Chorus; president of the Poplar Lawn Sunday School Union; and a member of the Blackstone Community Chorus.
As a young man, he married Roberta Williams, whom preceded him in death, and to this union eight children were born.
Preceding him in death are six siblings, Nante Rhoades, George Lee Rhoades, Pinkie Shield, Louise Jeffiers, Sarah Jones, and Gladys Graham.
He leaves to cherish his memory:Â his children, Tom R. (Mary) of Richmond, VA, Dr. Freeman (Anna) of Tacoma, WA, Robert (Barbara) of Greensboro, NC, Martha of Henrico, VA, Samuel J. (Verna), William (Linda) and Reverend James R. (Juanita) of Chesterfield, VA and Margaret (James) of Victoria, VA; twenty one grandchildren; forty-one great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; one sister, Mary Rhoades of Philadelphia, PA; one devoted brother, Joseph Rhodes (Grace) of Blackstone, VA; two sisters-in-law, Elsie Maddux of Baltimore, MD and Deloris Fitzgerald of Blackstone, VA; one brother-in-law, Eddie Edmonds (Christine) of Rawlings, VA; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. at Springhill Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.
