Obituary for Theodore M. Johnson
Our beloved, Theodore M. Johnson, peacefully departed this life on Saturday, December 31, 2022 at Heritage Hall Rehabilitation Center, Blackstone, VA. Theodore was born, June 30, 1943 to the late Mary M. Johnson of Blackstone, VA and the late Earl Johnson of East Orange, NJ.
As a child, he was diagnosed with spinal meningitis, which affected his hearing and speech. He attended Hampton State Institute, Hampton, VA for Deaf and Blind. The Hamp- ton State Institute provided qualified programs to assist students with a qualified environment of learning to teach students with hearing, vision, and speech impairments. Theodore excelled during the program and graduated.
He was employed at several jobs within our community -- Circle Sales, Blackstone, VA; West’s Food Center, Blackstone, VA for over 30 years; and Mitchell’s Restaurant, Blackstone, VA. Theodore was truly a faithful, dedicated, and dependable hard worker. He respected his community, family, neighbors, lifelong friends -- especially Mr. Tommy West, his dedicated caregiver. Mr. West cared for Theodore over the years and Theodore respected him and was truly thankful for their bond and friendship.
Theodore loved football, playing cards, dancing, and people, He never met a stranger, and a stranger never met him. Theodore endured his trials, tribulations, and tests with a grateful heart and smile. He is preceded in death by his parents, Mary M. and Earl Johnson; brother, Alfred Marshall; and many other close relatives.
Theodore leaves to cherish his precious memories his devoted caregiver, Thomas West of Blackstone, VA; brother, James E. Marshall of Blackstone, VA; sister, Claire White, of Blackstone, VA; nieces, Vanessa M. (James) Goode, Penny M. (Gary) Tucker of Blackstone, VA, Diane Gilchest, of Waldorf, MD, Deborah (John) King, of Frederick, MD; nephews, James E. (Lisa) Marshall, Jr., Claiborne B. Marshall, both of Frederick, MD, Kem (Deana) Marshall of Macon, GA, Sean Waye of Alexandria, VA; cousins, Ophelia Pretlow, Rev. Nellie Myrick, both of Prince George, VA, James Branch of Petersburg, VA, Charlie Bragg of Dinwiddie, VA, Rosa Cabbins of Blackstone, VA; and host of great-nieces, great-nephews, and relatives.
