Obituary for Shirley H. Fowlkes
Shirley H. Fowlkes entered eternal rest on April 11, 2009 with her loving family by her bedside at St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond, VA.  She was born March 2, 1938 in Dinwiddie County, VA  to the late Floyd and Bertha Harper.
Shirley joined Spring Hill Baptist Church at an early age.  She often attended services at First Baptist Church Centraila in Richmond with her son and family until her illness no longer allowed her to do so.  She attended Nottoway County public schools, and later became employed at Heritage Hall Nursing Home where she worked as a CNA for 35 years.
Shirley will be fondly remembered by family and friends as a warm hearted, loving woman.  She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.  She was known to dedicate her time to taking care of her family and anyone that needed assistance.  She loved the Lord, listening to spirituals and spending time with loved ones.
She will be forever loved and missed by her husband "the love of her life" Charles W. Fowlkes; daughters, Joann "Jo" Harper of Lynchburg, VA and Wanda "Jeano" Ward of Burkeville, VA; sons, Charles "Melvin" Fowlkes (Tangee) of Amelia, VA and Shawn "D" Fowlkes (Lee) of Richmond, VA; devoted niece, Shirley "Temple" Wilson of Blackstone, VA; grandchildren, Tiffany, Steven, Scot, Derrick, Delshay, Avery, Deondra, Malcolm, Shakia and Shakyra; great grandchildren, Asia and Destine.  She held a special relationship with her children and grandchildren, but it was known to many of the special bond she had with her beloved grandson Malcolm "Mac".  She also leaves to cherish her memory, two sisters, Reverend Addie Holloway of Amelia, VA and Laura Anderson (Ray) of Blackstone, VA; two brothers, Floyd Edward Harper (Emma) of Washington, DC and Earl Harper (Carol) of Portland, OR; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death are brothers, William A., Herbert "Dean", Ernest "Mays" Harper and sisters, Ruth Booker, Bertha "Mable" Branch and Ruby Fitzgerald.
Funeral Services Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Spring Hill Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.
W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home of Blackstone in charge of the Arrangements.
