Obituary for Shirley D. Mitchell
Shirley Doreatha Green Mitchell entered into eternal rest June21, 2009. She was born August 15, 1939 in Blackstone, Virginia to the late John Luther Green and Ritchetta Friend Green. She was the eighth of ten siblings and preceded in death by Julia Josephine Anderson, Martha Hawkes, Pocahantas Fitzgerald, Annie Smith, Willie Green and Wilson Green.
Shirley accepted Christ into her life and joined the Spring Hill Baptist Church at the age of 10 in 1949. Over the years, Shirley served in many capacities in Spring Hill Baptist Church to include: Deaconess, President of the Deaconess Society, Assistant Church Mother, Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of Sunday School, Co-Editor of the yearbook committee and upon the request of former Pastor Harold Farmer prepared the first church telephone directory.
She is a graduate of the Luther H. Foster High School in Nottoway, Virginia and Cortez W. Peters Business School in Washington, D.C. Shirley worked for the United States Government and retired as a Computer Programmer Analyst in 1988.
Shirley's commitment to her community was expressed through her membership in the Nottoway Chapter NAACP and the Nottoway Civic League. In addition, she was a member of Eastern Star (Fairbanks, Alaska Chapter) and the Luther H. Foster High School Alumni Association.
Shirley leaves to cherish her memory a loving husband, Waymond D. Mitchell, Sr.; one son, Waymond D. Mitchell, Jr. of Blackstone, VA; two step-daughters, Chenita Mitchell and Lolita Cooper of New Jersey; three grandchildren, Michael Cooper, Brandon Cooper, and Iesha Mitchell; one grandson Jamaal Cooper preceded her in death; and three great grandchildren. Two sisters, Leola Pritchett (Floyd) and Lillie R. Cragg of Richmond; one brother, James E. Green of Blackstone, VA; two sister-in laws Florence Crum (Henry) of Ohio and Beatrice Davis of Washington, DC; one brother-in law, Willie Shark of Texas; four God children, Latoya Cragg Pettiford, James Cragg, Jr. (Tammy), A. Burton Cragg and Raymond Daniels of Richmond, VA; along with a host of devoted nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Especially close to her heart are long-time friends Thelma (Deloris) Evans, Esther Crawford and Harriet (Doretha) Greenhill that provided both love and support during her illness.
Funeral Services Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 12:00 noon at Springhill Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.
