Obituary for Shirley Ann Banks
Shirley Ann Ford Banks, affectionately known as “Mom”, “Mommy” and “MaMa”, was called to eternal rest on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Chesterfield County, Va. at the age of 61.
Shirley was born to the late Lewis Benjamin and Mary Susie Ford of Blackstone, Va. She received her education in the Nottoway County Public School System.
At a young age, Shirley accepted Christ in her life and joined the Cellar Creek Baptist Church. As an adult, she was joined in holy matrimony to the late, David E. Banks, Sr. From this union, three children were born; David, Jr., Sherry and Donna.
During her Christian journey, Shirley devoutly served in many ministries. To name a few: Sunday School Superintendent, Choir, Hospitality, Pastor’s Aide, Teacher, Trustee, Women’s Ministry and Mission. She also served as Treasurer for the Poplar Lawn Sunday School Union. Shirley’s desire to serve the Lord was so profound and dedicated, she would serve anywhere, at anytime, for anybody, without a moments notice.
Shirley was employed at Levi Strauss until she began to further her education in special education and early childhood development, which enabled her to move into her calling and area of passion, working with children. This calling lasted for approx. 22 years, retiring in June 2008.
Shirley lived a life of enjoyment through bowling, traveling and spending quality time with her family and friends. She had a sense of humor that was so unique and special, it would leave you in stitches, holding your side, while tears ran down your face, yet she never cracked a smile and would say, “I don’t see where it’s so funny.” Her wisdom, strength, spiritual guidance and unwavering faith, constantly gave rise for her to be a listening ear, a friendly smile and an encourager. Just being in a room with her, brought joy and delight to all those in her presence.
This beautiful Angel leaves to cherish the memories of her life, her three children, David (Brigitte), Sherry and Donna (Melvin); two grandchildren, Chantel and Felicia; two step-grandchildren, Tamari and Tashanika; one great-grandchild, Xavier; Brothers, Louis (Dorothy), Chester (Martha), Melvin (Ann) and Larry (Linda); Sisters, Mary (Francis), Jannie, Joyce (Earl) and Marilyn; God-daughter, Dionnie Jones; nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and a multitude of devoted extended family/friends, particularly, Martha Ford, Mary Gilchrist, Brenda Jones and Rosemary Church.
Funeral Services Saturday, May 23, 2009 at 2:30 P.M. at Cellar Creek Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.
W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home of Blackstone in charge of the arrangements.
