Obituary for Sarah W. Epes
Deaconess Sarah White Epes, daughter of the late Annie B. and Baxter White, Sr., entered into eternal rest quietly and peacefully at her residence on Monday, February 9, 2015. She was the eighth oldest of thirteen siblings.
She was baptized at an early age and joined the Shiloh Baptist Church.  As a child Sarah sang in the choirs.  She was an active member until her health failed.  Sarah was a member of the Senior and Combined Choir, member of the Deaconess, Hospitality, Church Aide and Pastor’s Aid Ministries.  She received her education in the Nottoway School System.
Sarah met William B. Epes and they were married on September 16, 1950.  He preceded her in death after forty-nine years.
Sarah was employed at Piedmont State Hospital and retired after thirty plus years.  After retirement, she continued to work in nursing until the age of seventy-nine.
Sarah had four passions: she loved gardening, her yard was always manicured with plants, flowers and garden scenery.  She also placed floral arrangements in and outside of Shiloh Baptist Church; she had a profound love of hats, her head was always adorned on Sunday with a beautiful church hat; her nursing skills were perfected, her children would sometimes call her Sarah Epes, MD; she loved to cook, always making home-made dishes.  People loved her famous home made rolls and her specialties, “Apple Crunch” and “Cream Cheese Pound Cake.”
She leaves to cherish her precious and loving memories:  three devoted daughters, Rose Marie “Puddin” Hayes of Blackstone, VA, Carolyn E. Mason (George) of Petersburg, VA and Wilma Epes-Bush of Midlothian, VA; five grandchildren, a devoted granddaughter, Sharon S. Hayes, Bryant Hayes, David Hayes (Kiara), Courtney Bush and Regina Bush; six great grandchildren, Tyenegzerial “Tye” Shell, II, Maureana “My My” Lee, Shaniya Hayes, Davion Hayes, Zy’Renae Allen and Genesis Bush; two great-great grandchildren, Avin Love and Jade Shell; two sisters, Shirley Watkins of Blackstone, VA and Mary E. Porter of Chicago, IL; one brother, William H. White of Loudon, TN; four sisters-in-law, Dana White of Oklahoma City, OK, Sammie White of Baltimore, MD, Nora B. White of Blackstone, VA and Hazel T. White of Blackstone, VA; special friends, Deacon Joseph and Deaconess Grace Rhoades, Trustee Theodore and Deacon Jerue Foster; and a host of cousins, nephews, devoted church family, neighbors, and wonderful friends.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 14, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the Greenview Cemetery, Blackstone.

W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home of Blackstone in charge of the arrangements.
