Obituary for Sarah Elizabeth Green
Sarah Elizabeth Dodson was one of 11 children born to the union of the late Thomas Henry and Marie Dodson on April 1, 1927 in Nottoway County, Virginia.  On Tuesday, September 29, 2015 she peacefully entered into eternal rest at her home in Nottoway, Virginia with her children by her side.
Sarah attended Nottoway County Public Schools.  She was baptized at an early age and was a devoted member of New Poplar Mt. Baptist Church for over 50 years, where she sang on the choir, taught children’s Sunday School and served as Sunday School secretary.  Her service in the church brought her a great deal of joy.  She had a beautiful voice and loved using it to sing praises to the Lord.  She was a faithful and dedicated church member until her health started to decline.
Sarah’s sweet, gentle, nurturing spirit, and unconditional, non-judgmental love were evident to all who knew her.  She was everyone’s favorite - aunt, sister, friend.  She had a gift for making everyone feel that they were special and loved.  She was a most loving wife and mother who was totally and selflessly devoted to her family.
She welcomed everyone into her home with such warmth and grace.  She loved to cook and you could usually find her in the kitchen preparing some of her famous, mouth-watering dishes like fried chicken, collard greens, yams, fried corn, black-eyed peas and baked tomatoes, yeast rolls, pound cakes, blackberry rolls and blackberry dumplings—just to name a few.  These are still treasured favorites of many family members.
Sarah also loved going fishing with her beloved husband Henry (“Jimmy”).  Fish was her favorite food - she would always jokingly say, “fish is my birthmark”.  She also loved gardening -  she had a “green thumb” and grew beautiful plants and flowers.  In her quiet time, she loved reading the bible, working with puzzles and listening to gospel music.
Sarah dedicated her life to raising her children and loving her family to her last days.  Her life was an extraordinary example of love, strength, faith, hard work and integrity.  She leaves a legacy of lessons that will live on in her children and grandchildren for generations to come.
Sarah leaves to cherish her memory, a loving and devoted family: Five children: Ruby Burrell (Cliff) of Silver Spring, MD; Sarah DeShazior (Carl) of Herndon, VA; Joey Green (Lydia) of Nottoway, VA; Henry Green, Jr. of Nottoway, VA; and Tommie Green (Kearnetta) of Wilmington, NC; one daughter-in-law Alma Dodson; one son-in-law Reverend Nathaniel Tucker; ten grandchildren: Lorita Dodson; Daphne Gray; Corey Dodson; Michael Tucker; Kevin Tucker; Lauryn Burrell; Dallas DeShazior Flores; Shaniece Green; Christopher Green and Philip Green; eight great-grandchildren: Daneika Dodson; Vantwon Dodson; Kiandra Dodson; Shakiva Dodson; Tacorion Wright; Travis Tucker; Chris Tucker and Jada Tucker; two siblings: Esther Walker and Estelle Eppes; two sisters-in-law: Alma Fitzgerald and Mildred Green; one brother-in-law, Sylvester Green; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  Sarah was preceded in death by her loving husband, Henry Green and two children: George Dodson and Doris Tucker.
