Samuel Morris Daniel “Doc” Blackwell, 77 passed away on December 25, 2025, in Ashland, Virginia. Born on February 27, 1948, in Blackstone Virginia to his late parents, Samuel S. and Virginia Blackwell. He was the second oldest child of this union. He lived a life marked by dedicated service, music, and generosity.
A proud veteran, Doc served two tours of duty for his country as an Army Ranger during the Vietnam War. His time in the military embodied courage and loyalty - qualities that remained with him throughout his life. After returning home, he continued to serve others in quieter but no less meaningful ways. Known for always being willing to lend a helping hand, Doc was a “Jack of all Trades”. If it needed fixing, he could do just that. He was most notably a skilled electrician and carpenter.
Music was one of Doc’s greatest passions. A talented singer and guitarist, he brought joy to many through his performances and impromptu sessions with friends and family. Whether strumming a familiar tune, lending his voice to a heartfelt song or teaching his grandson to play guitar, Doc’s music was an extension of his generous spirit.
Doc was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Mildred Hilliard and Lillian Viola Fitzgerald.
He is lovingly remembered by his son, Jerel Blackwell, Sr. (Shari) of Prince George, VA, four grandchildren, Julian Blackwell-Davis (Shay) of Chesapeake, VA, Jerel, Jr, Evan and Jhalyne Blackwell of Prince George, VA; great-granddaughter, Melody Blackwell-Davis; his brother, Gus Blackwell Sr. (Shirley) of Blackstone, VA; his longtime partner, Carrie Green and bonus daughter Sylvia Battle (Ron) both of Richmond, VA. Also, left to cherish his memory are nieces Margie Godfrey, Angela Mattison (Booker), Samantha Fitzgerald, Novia Scott Taylor (Lloyd) and Maurisa Hilliard (Ricky Wilson); nephew Gus Blackwell Jr. (LaShawn) and many other family members and friends who knew and loved him.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire acts of kindness and courage.
Though our hearts grieve, we find solace in remembering the laughter, the stories, and the love we shared. His memory will forever live on in our hearts. Rest in peace Doc. You are deeply missed and forever loved.
