Obituary for Samuel A. Hawkes, Sr.
Samuel Armstead, son of the late William and Della Fitzgerald Hawkes, was born February 1, 1922 in Nottoway County, and departed this life on Saturday, May 1, 2010 at 3:15 am at Heritage Hall Nursing Home, Blackstone, VA.
Samuel Armstead attended and was educated at the Nottoway Training School. At an early age Armstead was baptized and joined Mount Nebo Baptist Church, where he served as an usher, and a trustee until his death.
Armstead worked as a self employed carpenter. He also drove bus for Nottoway County Schools for twelve years. As a carpenter he was known within the county and neighboring counties for the many structures he built. One of his most proud accomplishment was his part in building this church (Mt. Nebo).
Armstead was united in Holy Matrimony to Mary Lucille Carrington on January 28, 1943. to this union two sons were born.
Armstead joined armed forces in February 1943 and served his country until January 1946.
Armstead was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester and Howard Hawkes; four sisters, Eunice Thomas, Ethel Willard, Lorene DeVan, and Martha Fowlkes; a daughter-in-law, Charold Hawkes; but leaves to cherish his memory: a loving and devoted wife, Lucille of the home; two sons, Lafayette of Maryland and Samuel Jr. (Joyce) of the home; one brother, Wayland Hawkes of Randallstown, MD; one sister, Bernell Austin of New York; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; five sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services Friday, May 7, 2010 at 12:00 noon at Mt. Nebo Bapist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.
