Obituary for Ruth Johns Pegram
Mrs. Ruth Johns Pegram departed this life to join the heavenly caravan on the morning of February 14, 2016. She was a beloved member of the Nottoway County Community for more than sixty-five years. She came to Nottoway to educate its students in 1948 fresh out of Virginia State College (now University) and never left.
Ruth Johns Pegram was born to Howson McKinley Johns and Mable Mosely Johns in Charlotte County on April 26, 1926. She was the oldest of three children. Her brothers Atwood M. Johns and Harold O. Johns preceded her to glory. She gave her life to the Lord at an early age at Aspen Hill Baptist Church in Charlotte County and remained a faithful member until her death.
Ruth Johns Pegram married James T. Pegram in April of 1960 and out of that join came three children. James Pegram preceded her in death in 1967 and she raised her children with the love of both parents.
She was an involved member of the community for her entire lifetime until age slowed her. She taught in the Nottoway County School system for a total of thirty-seven years and retired to a rich life in 1990. She traveled, worked with the Nottoway Amelia Virginia State Alumni Chapter, the Nottoway Democratic Party Committee, The Homemakers Club, the Nottoway Literacy Program, the Virginia and National Retired Teachers Association, Election Board of Nottoway, Luther H. Foster Alumni Association and many other activities.
She was affectionately known as “Miss Johns” by her students from the Nottoway Training School and Luther H. Foster. She touched the lives of many students in the area sometimes several generations in the same family. She will be greatly missed.
She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter Cynthia (Wendell) Ervin, and two sons James T. Pegram, II and Robert (Mildred) Pegram. One Sister in Law Marion Johns. six nieces and nephews (children of her brothers): Ronald Johns, Wanda Johnson, Debra Friday, Cheryl (Pat) Anderson, Rodney Johns and Reginald Johns. Her best friend since her time at Virginia State Mrs. Alice Birckhead. And a host of other family and friends.
Funeral Services Friday, February 26, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Aspen Hill Baptist Church, 515 Francisco Rd., Brookneal, VA. Interment church cemetery.
