Obituary for Ruth F. Jones
Rhoda Ruth Kries Fowlkes Jones was born in Burkeville, Virginia on November 5, 1909 to the late Sidney and Sallie Epps Fowlkes. She departed this life on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at Hickory Hill Retirement Community in Burkeville.
At an early age she joined Christ Presbyterian Church in Burkeville. When the churches merged, she became a member of Bethesda United Presbyterian Church in Nottoway, Virginia. She was a church Elder and an active member of United Presbyterian Women until her health began to decline. She was dedicated to her church and all of its concerns, including helping organize and teach Sunday Scholl and Bible School.
“Ruth”, as she preferred to be called, attended Nottoway County Public Schools, then Ingleside Seminary for high school. She graduated from St. Paul’s Polytechnic Institute in Lawrenceville, Virginia with a normal degree in teaching. While teaching, she returned to St. Paul’s College and in 1959 graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Her teaching career began in Charlotte County; Saxe, Virginia. Most of her career was spent in Nottoway County Schools.In addition to reading educational materials, Ruth was an avid reader of religious books, novels and magazines. Shen not reading, she could be found in the kitchen creating her famous sweet potato pies, lemon pound cake or southern fried chicken.
Until her health failed, she was an active member of Evergreen Benjamin Lodge No. 64 Order of Eastern Star. Three special people, from Bethesda, continued to provide Bible Study, rides to church and voting, plus personal care during her last years at home and throughout her tenure at Hickory Hill. Mrs. Ernestine Bass, Mrs. Christine Johnson, and Mrs. Laura Pollard have been a true blessing to her and the family for many, many years.
Ruth was married for 64 years to Elwood L. Jones. He preceded her in death in 2004.
She leaves to cherish her memories, son, Elwood S. Jones (Charlotte) of Ft. Washington, Maryland; her daughter, Catherine J. Holt (Al) of Gwynn Oak, Maryland; one grandson, Omar A. Holt of Gwynn Oak, Maryland; one sister-in-law (who is more like a sister), Evelyn J. Allen of Philadelphia, PA; a very special cousin, Bessie S. Ransome of Farmville, VA; fives nieces: Bernie R. Hogan, Mabel L. Jones, Brenda Y. Fowlkes, Barbara Robinson and Evangeline Williams; two nephews: Lloyd Seay, Jr., and Lewis Clinton Miller, Jr.; a host of great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins; and her numerous caregivers at Hickory Hill Retirment Community.
Funeral Services Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at 1:00 from Bethesda Presbyterian Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.
