Obituary for Ruth E. Rather
On April 24, 1951 Ruth was born in Crewe, VA to Fred Milton Pettis and Dorothy K. (Pettis) Jennings, who preceded her in death. Ruth was educated in the Nottoway County School System. She graduated from Crewe High School in 1969. She accepted the Lord at an early age and was baptized at Union Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Fitz.
Ruth was awarded her wings on Monday, November 21, 2016 at Centra Southside Community Hospital in Farmville, VA. She left peacefully surrounded by her family and loved ones.
Ruth married the love of her life, Roger E. Rather. To this union three sons were born: Marvin, Tyrone and Reginald. Ruth and Roger were married for thirty-six years, until the Lord called Roger to his heavenly home.
After joining the workforce and performing various entry level positions, she decided to further her education by attending Southside Virginia Community College in Alberta, VA. She graduated in August 1991, and earned her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked at Piedmont Geriatric Hospital for numerous years. While working at Piedmont, she attended Travel Agent School and established R&A’s Travel Agency with her partner Asia. She later joined the workforce at Nottoway Correctional Center. Ruth officially retired from nursing in April 2016 and pursued her love for travel. She loved to keep in touch with her many friends and loved ones. While she was a quiet individual, she touched the lives of many with her tenderness and compassion.
She leaves to cherish her memory: three sons Marvin (Lisa), Tyrone (Candace) and Reginald (Olivia); five grandchildren, Asia, Madison, Jordyn, Justin and Jaiden; one sister, Gwendolyn (Diane); three brothers, David, Ralph and Gregory; eleven sisters-in-law, Kathleen, Shirley Ann, Fannie, Deloris, Natalie, Gloria, Mary (Cyd), Diane, Denise, Dione and Valerie; four brothers-in-law, Joseph, Lawrence, Larry and Harold; two aunts, Barbara (Chick) and Dallas (Celeste); two uncles, Matthew and Warren; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Ruth especially touched the lives of four special friends, Val Rather, Cyd Rather, Lessie Jennings, and Brenda Harding.
Ruth loved her family, shopping, reading, traveling and taking her friends with her around the globe.
