Obituary for Ruth Ann Gills
Ruth Ann Gills separated this life on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. Ruth was born on June 24, 1947, in Jetersville, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Vanderbilt and Eva Wilkerson Marshall.  In addition to the parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Dr. Bobby James Gills and granddaughter, Myla Allyse Morgan.
Ruth was baptized and joined St. James Baptist Church where she remained a member until her passing. She was attended St. John Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia.
Ruth attended Amelia County Public Schools and was a 1965 graduate of Russell Grove High School. After graduating from high school, Ruth attended the Piedmont School of Nursing in Burkeville, Virginia. Upon completing the needed requirements she became a Licensed Practical Nurse and was employed by the Piedmont Geriatric Hospital.
In January 1970, Ruth married Bobby James Gills. From this union was born two daughters, Melinda and Cassandra. Ruth and Bobby move to Washington D.C. shortly after being married, there she was employed at Children’s Hospital National Medical Center. Ruth furthered her education by attending Federal City College (currently known as the University of the District of Columbia) where she completed the requirements to become a Registered Nurse.
In July 1978, Ruth and Bobby moved from Washington D.C. so that she could be near and help care for her ailing mother. Ruth was employed at the Richmond Memorial Hospital and subsequently at Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center from which she retired in January 2011 after 32 years of service.
Ruth loved her family and friends, she always made the time to care for ill family members, helped her children and grandchildren, and was always lending a helping hand to others wherever her services was needed.
Her motto was, “If I could help someone as I travel along the way, then my living will not be in vain”.
She leaves to cherish her memory, two loving daughters, Melinda Gills-Becks of Richmond; Cassandra and her husband Michael of Virginia Beach; one granddaughter Jame’ Becks and one grandson Simeon Becks of Richmond; two devoted sisters, Mary Marshall of Jetersville and Annie Matthew (Randolph) of Lanham, Maryland; one aunt, Regina Wilkerson; mother-in-laws, Naomi Gills of Virginia Beach and Laura C. Bailey of Baltimore, Maryland; sister- in-laws Barbara Massey, Valerie Austin (James), Carolyn Moore(Danny) and Glavia Blackwell; brother-in –laws  Junius Hassan( Wanda), Andrew Gills, Stephen Gills, and Selwyn Gills; son-in-law James Becks, and a host of  nieces, nephews, cousins, other relative and friends.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 6, 2014 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Michael W. Hawkins Funeral Home, 15001 Patrick Henry Highway, Amelia, VA. Funeral service will be held Monday, April 7, at the Pilgrim Baptists Church, 9001 Genito Road, Jetersville, VA 23083. The interment will be held at the Veteran Cemetery Amelia, VA 23002.

 The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 6, 2014 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Michael W. Hawkins Funeral Home, 15001 Patrick Henry Highway, Amelia, VA. Funeral service will be held Monday, April 7, at the Pilgrim Baptists Church, 9001 Genito Road, Jetersville, VA 23083. The interment will be held at the Veteran Cemetery Amelia, VA 23002.
