Obituary for Robert L. Jeter, Jr.
ROBERT L. JETER, JR. was called to eternal rest on July 14, 2009. He was the fourth of five children born to the late Robert L. and Louise V. Jeter on January 17, 1921 in Burkeville, VA. Three sisters, Constance Jeter Rich, Octavia Jeter James and Katherine Jeter Miller preceded him in death.
Robert was educated in the public schools of Nottoway County, graduating from Nottoway Training School in 1940. Robert was baptized at First Nottoway Baptist Church at an early age. After finishing school, he worked at the Newport News Shipyard for three years. In 1944, Robert joined the U. S. Army, served for two years and
was honorably discharged as Master Sergeant. He returned to the Newport News Shipyard where he continued working until 1949. He returned home and worked as a carpenter for fifteen years with a building contractor; after that he started his own business in carpentry and cabinetmaking. His carpentry gift is showcased throughout the county. The gazebo in the park in Crewe and the communion table and altar here at First Nottoway in the children’s church are just two examples of his work.
In 1944, just after joining the military, Robert married the late Velma Smith of Crewe, VA. Out of this union, two children, Marilyn and Carlton were born.
In 1970, Robert accepted a position at Southside Skill Center as an instructor in Building Maintenance where he worked for ten years. In 1980, he went to the Amelia-Nottoway Vocational Center as an instructor in cabinetmaking and carpentry for three years. Robert retired in 1983 and continued to enjoy life with his family and friends. He loved gardening and fishing.
Robert became ill in January 2008 and his long time friend, Catherine Ward, lovingly cared for him until he passed.
He leaves to share their memories: one daughter, Marilyn Jeter of Fort Washington, MD; three sons, Carlton Jeter of Alexandria, VA, Bruce Ward of Richmond, VA and Steve Ward of Chesterfield, VA; four grandchildren, Bruce Ward, Jr., Morgan Ward, Travis Byrd and Clayton Ward; one sister, Marjorie Streat of Crewe, VA; two nieces, Venita Atkins of Fort Washington, MD and Phyllis Ware of Crewe, VA; one nephew, Rodney Miller (Fannie) of Cincinnati, OH; one great nephew, Philander Jennings; three great nieces, Rene’ Miller, D’Chelle Miller and Octavia Ware; and Catherine Ward, long time friend.
Funeral Services Saturday, July 18, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at First Nottoway Baptist Church, Crewe, VA with interment in the Olive Branch Cemetery, Burkeville, VA.
W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home of Blackstone in charge of the arrangements.
