Obituary for Richard T. Watkins
In fulfillment of the plan God had for his life here on earth, on January 18, 2022, Gunnery Sergeant Richard Thomas Watkins, Jr., went quietly to sleep at St. Luke’s Monroe Hospital in Stroudsburg, PA.
He was born in Lunenburg County, VA on February 4, 1940, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard T. and Sallie Mae Hawthorne Watkins, Sr. He was baptized at a young age and his faith kept him throughout the years under God’s grace.
He was educated in Lunenburg County School System and thereafter enlisted in the United States Marine Corps serving to then he was honorably discharged. In 1966 he married Shirley Ann White and to this union a baby girl was born. He then pursued careers as a civil worker with the US Postal Service and later as security for The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, VA.
Those preceding him in death are his wife Shirley; sisters, Essie Robertson (Donald), Alease Hand (Gordon), Mary L. Jones, and Anna L. Bethea; brother, Cephas Watkins.
He leaves to cherish precious memories: daughter, Kenita R. Watkins-Willis of Crewe, VA; son, Michael Curtis of Lynchburg, VA; four grandsons, Erick D. Willis, Terrance M. Casper, Jr., SaVeon J. Casper and NaGene K. Casper all of Crewe, VA; one granddaughter, Kamisha Curtis of Upper Marlboro, MD; one great-granddaughter, Aria Madison Willis of Crewe, VA; one brother, Dr. Joseph S. Watkins, Sr. (Dr. Patricia Watkins); one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Porter of Chicago, IL; one brother-in-law, William H. White of Loudon, TN; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral Service Thursday, January 27, 2022 at 3:00PM at W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home, Blackstone. Interment private.
