Obituary for Richard Lewis Carmichael
Richard Lewis Carmichael, 84 years old of Blackstone, Virginia entered into eternal life on Monday, March 16, 2015 with his loving wife, Dorothy Carmichael of 36 years by his side. He was preceded in death by his mother Iva Andrews; his grandparents Lewis and Nora Coles of Blackstone, VA. Richard was baptized at an early age. He joined Shiloh Baptist Church of Blackstone, VA.Â
He graduated from Nottoway Training School in 1947. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1948 and retired after 20 years of service with numerous honors in 1967. To further his education he attended Virginia State College and received his Bachelor of Science and his Masters of Education. Carmichael worked at the Federal Department of Corrections Education in various states, retiring after 15 years. He also retired from the State Department of Corrections Education after 13 years.
Richard was very active and well known in the community. He was a great man of integrity. He founded the Lewis and Nora Coles Foundation, providing certificates to students for completing their academic achievements from Amelia-Nottoway Vocational School. Carmichael started the Air Force JROTC at Amelia County High School and Co-founded the Naval JROTC Program at Nottoway High School. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 5313 of Nottoway County.
Richard leaves to cherish his fondest memories, a loving and devoted wife Dorothy of the home; six daughters Nora Carmichael of Maryland, Patricia Carmichael of Washington, DC, Bettie Richardson of Fredericksburg, VA, Amy Russell and Cordelia Pickens of Atlanta, GA, and Melissa Kemp of Virginia Beach, VA; two sons Lee Seward and Fred Seward of Atlanta, GA; sixteen grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one son-in-law, Charlie Russell of Greenville, SC; three sisters-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A special devoted High School Friend, Mr. Donald Webster of Atlanta, GA and devoted family friends, Roy and Brenda Belfield of Richmond, VA and Dr. Akshay Dave, MD of Hopewell, VA.
Carmichael will be greatly missed by his loving wife, family and friends. But he will remain in our hearts.
