Reverend G. Wilson Monroe was the eleventh child born to the late Wallace and Bettie Monroe on April 1, 1935. He departed this life at St. Francis Hospital on May 24, 2023. He was preceded in death by nine siblings.
Reverend G. Wilson Monroe was educated in the Amelia County School System. He was a farmer and pulp wood cutter. He also worked at Richmond Standard Crafts designing and making metal cabinets until they went out of business.
Reverend Monroe joined the Chester Grove Baptist Church at an early age. He served for many years on the yard committee. On July 31, 1977, he was ordained as a Deacon of Chester Grove under the leadership of Reverend Walter Prince. He received his divine calling into the Gospel Ministry on the first Sunday in August 1989. He preached his initial sermon and was licensed on October 29, 1989 at Chester Grove by Reverend Dr. James H. Taylor, III. He was ordained to the work of the Gospel Ministry by authority of Chester Grove under the pastorate of Reverend Dr. Archie German.
On October 31, 1995, Reverend Monroe was called to pastor the Monroe Baptist Church where he served as pastor for twenty-two years. Under his leadership a new church was built. Reverend Monroe retired as pastor of Monroe Baptist Church on December 20, 2017.
He was married to Sallie Lucille Dickerson on October 26, 1957. To this union was born three sons Gilbert, Michael and Preston (deceased).
Reverend Monroe enjoyed preaching, singing, making people laugh, writing poetry, gardening and loving his family and animals.
He is survived by his loving wife Sally (Lucille) of Amelia; two sons Gilbert (Jacqueline) of Amelia and Michael (Dionne) of Chesterfield; three granddaughters La’Shon, Tyesn and Devyn; two grandsons Marcus and Brian; two sisters Dorothy Sheff of Amelia and Frances Booker of Petersburg; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, friends and two dogs.
