Obituary for Rachel S. Maddux
On Thursday, March 1, 2012 in the beauty of the day, God saw that his daughter had grown tired. He whispered to her “Take my hand and I will lead you home.” Knowing that her family would be all right, she gladly allowed him to guide her to a place of peace and rest. RACHEL ELIZABETH SHELTON was born on November 8, 1930 as the oldest of three children to the late Mattie and Anderson Shelton. She married John Waverly “JW” Maddux, who preceded her in death. Rachel accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church. Rachel was an excellent cook and baker. She was known for her German chocolate cake and especially her fried chicken. She enjoyed entertaining her family and friends and her home was the source of many gatherings. Rachel was a member of the Ladies’ Community Club, she served as the club’s unofficial “photographer” taking candid shots that brought laughter and smiles to everyone. Rachel was always full of life and fun. Although she had no children of her own, Rachel understood that true family exceeded blood lines and race. She was a mother, sister and aunt to many and it is with that spirit we share the family left to cherish her memories: her sister, Jessie Shelton Maddux; sister-in-law Agnes Bates; nieces and nephews Herbert Maddux, Jr., Zachary Maddux, Rachel R Maddux, Joan Bates, Ronald (Mattie) Bates, John (Frankie) Bates, Jr., Shirelle Threatt, Jonathan Shelton, Dominique Maddux-Jackson, Trina Maddux, Michael (Jennifer Dagner) Maddux, Catherine Threatt; special family members Joan and Stuart White; “children” Karen and Larry Fisher, Michael White, Sam (Melanie) White, John (Vicky) White, Lynn Chao; “grandchildren” Stuart White II, Aeden White; foster brother and sisters Robert Lee Campbell, Mary Ford, Morris Campbell, Beatrice Fowlkes; brothers-in-law, Ashur Maddux, Claiborne Maddux; close friends Ann Jones, Greta Stuart, Marie Fitzgerald, Marissa Coles and Maude Lee; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
