Obituary for Pernie M. Wooley, Jr.
PERNIE MASON WOOLEY, JR. departed his life on August 21, 2009 at his home in Crewe, VA. Born May 28, 1937, he was the only son of the late Pernie Wooley, Sr. and Dorothy Wooley.
He joined the Friendship Baptist Church in Baltimore, MD at an early age. After moving to Virginia, he became a member of the Eleven Oaks Baptist Church in Crewe, VA. Pernie graduated from Dunbar High School in Baltimore, MD and attended A&T University in Greensboro, NC where he received his degree in Biology.
Pernie later joined the United States Army and served three years. After his army career, he taught for ten years in the state of Delaware. He moved to Crewe, VA to be with his parents and began employment at Fort Pickett and worked there for approximately twelve years as a Warehouse Supervisor. In 1985 he worked as a Corrections Officer for Nottoway Correctional Center until he retired in 2004.
Pernie married his loving, devoted and caring wife, Velma Swinney on November 27, 1985. Together they have two children: daughter, Wendy Lynn Summers (Scott) of Keller, TX and Charles Vivvo Rush of Rockingham, NC. Pernie raised like his daughter, Indiaunte Bowden. He was the loving grandfather of eight grandchildren: Lauren and Christian of Keller, TX, Tacora, Indiaunte, Chris, Diamond and Sheniya of Rockingham, NC and Darren of Crewe, VA; one uncle, Howard Hardaway of Laurel, MD; two brothers-in-law, Charles Swinney and Robert Swinney of Rockingham, NC; three sisters-in-law, Lillie Swinney and Gwendolyn Swinney of Rockingham, NC and Alfie Swinney of Durham, NC; a host of loving cousins and friends; devoted and caring friends, Velma Birdsong, Carolyn Davis, Angela Fowlkes and Gwendolyn Jeter, and a devoted and caring cousin, Roscoe Anderson of Crewe, VA.
Graveside Services Friday, August 28, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. at the Hardaway Family Cemetery, Crewe.
