Obituary for Pastor Eugene A. Claiborne, Jr.

Reverend Eugene Andrew Claiborne, Jr., beloved son of the late Bettie Jones Claiborne and the late Eugene Andrew Claiborne, Sr., entered eternal rest on December 12, 2025. Born on March 31, 1953, he grew up rooted in faith, family, and community. At a young age, he accepted the Lord and was baptized at Shiloh Baptist Church in Blackstone, Virginia - a spiritual home that would shape his life’s calling. It was at Shiloh that he was ordained to preach the Gospel, beginning a lifelong journey of ministry and service.

Reverend Claiborne was educated in Nottoway County Public Schools and went on to graduate from the University of Virginia in May 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice. His professional path reflected his deep commitment to justice, rehabilitation, and human dignity. Upon graduating, he began his career with the Albemarle Charlottesville Joint Security Complex, where he made history as the first Coordinator of the Work Release Program. His leadership and dedication led to his promotion as Chief of Inmate Services.

He later continued his service at the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice, first as a Trainer and eventually as Supervisor for the Jail Training Department. Throughout his career, Reverend Claiborne was known for his integrity, compassion, and unwavering belief in the potential for transformation in every individual.

Answering God’s call to shepherd His people, Reverend Claiborne served faithfully as Pastor of Little Mount Baptist Church for 10 years, guiding the congregation with wisdom, humility, and a servant’s heart. He later became Pastor of Gravel Hill Baptist Church, where he ministered for 15 years. His preaching was marked by a deep passion for sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and his ministry touched countless lives. Reverend Claiborne was known for his kind heart, loving spirit, and genuine care for everyone he encountered.

For 37 years, Reverend Claiborne shared a devoted and loving marriage with Reverend Annette Jordan Claiborne. Together they built a life centered on faith, service, and family. They are the proud parents of three children: Richelle Claiborne, Eugene “Tre” Claiborne, III, and Justine Jordan. Reverend Claiborne was also blessed with one cherished granddaughter, Cheyenne Claiborne, who brought him immense joy and pride.

Reverend Eugene Claiborne’s life was marked by faith, purpose, and service—to God, to his community, and to the countless lives he touched through ministry. His legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him.
