Obituary for Ollie Fitzgerald Rather
Ollie Fitzgerald Rather, age 96 departed this life May 2, 2022, at Saint Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. She was born January 26, 1926, to The Late Fred Douglas Fitzgerald and Cordelia Lewis Fitzgerald in Victoria, Virginia. She was the youngest of three children. Her sister, Sallie Mae Fitzgerald Holmes and brother, Samuel Lee Fitzgerald, proceeded her in death.
She received her education in Lunenburg County Public School system in Lunenburg, Virginia. She attended Cosmetology School and was employed as a beautician and also worked for a company making shoulder pads. Her last employment was with Maryland State Government, Spring Grove Hospital in the Medical Records Department, where she retired with over 25 years of service.

In 1946, she was united in Holy Matrimony to Deacon David J. Rather, who proceeded her in death on September 8, 2004. From this union, two sons were born.

Ollie accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and was baptized at Mount Olive Baptist Church, Victoria, Virginia. After relocating to Maryland, Ollie and David joined Wayland Baptist Church under leadership of the Late Reverend W. W. Payne, Pastor. Reverend Payne resigned from Wayand Baptist and had a vision to create a ministry to feed the hungry, clothed the naked, shelter the homeless and help the alcoholics and drug addicts. She was one of the original members that supported his vision, and The City Temple of Baltimore (Baptist) Church was established. After Reverend Payne retired, she continued her membership under the leadership of Reverend, Dr. Grady A. Yeargin, Jr.

Ollie was a dedicated choir member, singing praises to Lord all through her Christian journey.

Some of her hobbies were baking homemade rolls and cakes. Her family enjoyed her homemade goods, especially her grandchildren.

Ollie was a loving and kind person. She leaves to cherish her memory: Sons, David Cordell Rather, Sr. (Barbara) and Samuel Anthony Rather, Sr. (Elaine). Grandchildren, Christy Miller (Jeff), David C. Rather, Jr, Stacey R. Johnson (Kenneth) and Samuel A. Rather, II (Tanea). Seven great grandchildren, Goddaughter, Coleta Trueheart and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.

Viewing Saturday, May 14, 2022 from 1 to 5PM at W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home, 504 East Street, Blackstone, VA 23824.

Viewing Sunday, May 15, 2022 at 1:00PM with funeral service to follow at 1:30PM at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 2910 Burkeville Rd., Victoria, VA 23974. Interment church cemetery.
