Obituary for Mrs. Mattie L. Neal
Mattie Lou Neal, daughter of the late Samuel and Rebecca Collier and the wife of the late James Neal, was born on May 14, 1920 in Nottoway County, VA.  She departed this life on November 26, 2015.
Mattie was educated in the Nottoway County public schools and attended the Hicks Beauty School in Richmond, VA.   She received Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Jones Mission Baptist Church under the direction of the late Reverend George Thompson.
Mattie was preceded in death by six of her siblings: Johnny, Emma Jane, Walter, Sam, Elizabeth and Martha.
Although she had no children of her own, she assisted in raising her five nieces who affectionately called her “Auntie.”  Mattie was a people person, she loved everyone and no one was a stranger to her.
For over twenty years she was one of the organizers of the Neighbor Watch: National Night Out.  She continued with organizing this event until her health prevented her. She was an excellent cook, and served great meals at this event.
She leaves to cherish her memory: one sister, Lucy Curbeam of Baltimore, MD; five nieces: Gloria Jean Thompson (Edward) of Bronx, New York, Ernestine Gause (Wheeler) of Baltimore MD, Christine Cypress  (Henry) of Baltimore MD, Deborah Lundy (Wilmer Curtis) of Richmond VA and Barbara Gray (Michael) of Richmond VA; special friends Edward Green, Tommy and Pat Inge; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and devoted friends.
