Obituary for Miriam V. Hayman
Miriam Virginia (Carrington) Hayman was born on December 1, 1922 in Halifax County, Virginia to the late John and Marion Carrington. Miriam spent her early years in southern Virginia before moving to Philadelphia, PA in 1942.
After moving to Philadelphia, Miriam worked for several employers including Lit Brothers department store for many years. In 1950, she met her future husband Lester W. Hayman. The couple were married on March 5, 1952 and enjoyed nearly fifty years of matrimony until Lester’s passing in July 2001. Miriam and Lester lived in Philadelphia until 1981 when they moved to her home state of Virginia, settling in the Blackstone, Nottoway County area.
After returning to Virginia, Miriam devoted her time to caring for her family and friends and was actively involved as a longtime member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church. She was a loving and devoted wife to Lester and mother to their daughter, Reggie Poole and son, Wendell Hayman. She equally cherished her grandchildren, Wanza Poole, Jr. and Adanna Hayman along with her great grandchildren, Brandon Poole and Sophia Poole.
In 2017, Miriam returned to Philadelphia to live with her daughter Reggie where she remained until her passing on July 18, 2020.
Miriam leaves behind to cherish her memory: her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters, Alice Hawks and Nannie Doswell of Blackstone, VA; brother, Conrad Carrington and family of Albuquerque, NM; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hayman of Marietta, GA; daughter-in-law, Denise Hayman; a host of nieces, nephews and extended family as well as many beloved friends and church members.
Graveside Services were held Saturday, July 25, 2020 at New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery, Blackstone.
