Obituary for Meredith A. Shelton, Jr.
MEREDITH ARKLEY SHELTON, JR., son of the late Mary Helen and Meredith Arkley Shelton, Sr., was born May 29, 1941 in Glenside, PA. and he entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 in Southside Community Hospital in Farmville, VA after a lengthy illness.
He was baptized and joined Springhill Baptist Church at an early age. In later life, he became a member of Central Baptist Church in Salt Point, NY where he was a member of the Men’s Choir. Upon returning to Blackstone, VA, he reconnected with Springhill Baptist Church. “Skipper” (affectionately called by family and friends) received his education in Nottoway County, attending A.G. Richardson Elementary School and graduating from Luther H. Foster High School in June, 1959.
Meredith was employed with Pawling Corporation, Pawling, NY for twenty-five years as a department supervisor. After retirement, he and his wife Burnetta returned to Blackstone, VA to reconnect with family and friends. He loved to read the newspaper, which he did daily - the Richmond Times Dispatch and the Blackstone Courier Record, and he shared the news with family and visitors. One of his favorite articles was “The Rev. A.P. Bailey - Our Daily Bread”, and he also shared the wisdom from these articles with family, best friends and visitors. Also he loved golf and Thoroughbred Horse Racing.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Alexander M. Shelton and a grandson, Jaimison Charles Wooten.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving devoted wife, Burnetta Boone Shelton; daughters, Marci A. Moore and husband Kevin of Hyde Park, NY, Mildred F. Jones of Studio City, CA; sons, Marcus A. Shelton of Salisbury, CT, Victor B. Shelton of Loma Linda, CA, Keith B. Shelton of Tulsa, OK and Scott Meredith Wilmore of Manassa, VA; stepdaughters, Jessica Summers of Milbrook, NY and Bonnita Boone of Wingdale, NY; grandchildren, Autumn Leigh, Andre, Jessie, Brittney, Javonne and Kevin; one devoted sister, Evelyn Shelton Crawley of Montross, VA; two aunts, Louise Bush and Bertha Shelton of Blackstone, VA; one uncle, Willie B. Epes of Williamsburg, VA; sisters-in-law, Arlicie Mobley (Rudolph) of Ahoskie, NC and Laquetta Pierce of Waterford, CT; brother-in-law, Grant Pierce (Virginia) of Elizabeth City, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral Services Monday, April 14, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. from Springhill Baptist Church, Blackstone, VA with interment in the church cemetery.
