On August 22, 2025, God called our gentle giant, our quiet storm to his reward. Melvin Kirkwood Oliver was born on June 24, 1953 in Nottoway County.
Melvin was educated in Nottoway County Public Schools. He was baptized and was a member of the Union Baptist Church where he attended and was a former member of the Youth Choir.
At an early age Mel met Deborah and during their relationship his daughter Taylor Foster was born.
Melvin hobbies included fishing, playing cards and drag racing. He enjoyed displaying his personal race car in various car shows. He was also the unofficial manager and critic of The Friendly Five Gospel Singers.
Melvin was employed by Burkeville Veneer, Wilkerson Tire, Westvaco and Norfolk-Southern Railway.
He was affectionately known as Mel, Quiet Storm, Trolly and his most cherished titled “My Daddy” by his one and only Heartbeat, his loyal and devoted daughter Taylor Doris.
Mel was predeceased by his parents James H. Oliver, Sr. and Martha Jefferson Oliver and oldest brother, James H. Oliver, Jr. He leaves to cherish his legacy and memories, his daughter, Taylor Doris Foster; a devoted soulmate, Shirley Jennings; siblings, Bessie, Ronald, Sr. (Patricia) and Marvin (Diana); nieces and nephews, James (Christy), Ronald Jr., Shanice Carlisle (Marquis) and Martina; a host of great nieces and nephews; one great-great nephew; aunt, Frances Knight; sisters-in-law, Catherine Oliver and Marie Oliver; special friends, Dickie, Randy, Mane and Lorenzo; and a host of friends and cousins.
