Obituary for Mattie Anderson

Mattie Ingram Anderson entered eternal rest on May 9, 2025, at Southside Regional Hospital in Petersburg, VA. She was the youngest of ten children born to Charles and Sennie Campbell Ingram.

Mattie accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Gazerine Baptist Church. She served on the Usher Board, Pastor’s Aid, and the Missionary Circle for many years. She was also a trustee of Mt. Gazerine Baptist Church.

Mattie graduated from Luther H. Foster High School in 1963 and was a member of the Luther H. Foster Alumni Association. She later earned an associate degree from John Tyler Community College/Southside Community College and graduated from the Piedmont Licensed Practical Nursing School. She worked at Piedmont Geriatric Hospital for over 40 years, where she eventually retired.

After retirement, Mattie continued to serve her community by working in various roles, including positions at Nottoway Middle and High Schools.

She enjoyed traveling, attending family reunions—where she was rarely seen without her beloved granddaughter Kiara—going to yard sales, art and craft shows, participating in line dance classes and being a sitter for the sick.

Mattie was married to the love of her life, Maurice Jerome Anderson, for 46 years until his passing.

She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted son, Maurice Anderson (LaTasha) of South Chesterfield, VA; three grandchildren: Kiara Anderson of Prince George, VA, and Maurice and Aavin Anderson of Rhode Island, MA; one bonus grandchild, Jaron Jackson of South Chesterfield, VA; and a bonus great-grandchild, Jakai Jackson of South Chesterfield, VA.

She is also survived by her brother, Harvey Lee Ingram of Blackstone, VA; four sisters-in-law: Gwendolyn Lewis of Richmond, VA, Thelma Ingram Staten of Blackstone, VA, Margorie Anderson of Petersburg, VA, and Nancy Anderson of Jetersville, VA; and two brothers-in-law: Don Anderson of Richmond, VA, and Arnold Anderson of Crewe, VA.

A devoted niece, Joan Knox of Chester, VA, and her goddaughter, Kimberly Knox Wilson (Steven) of Chesterfield, VA, also survive her. She is remembered lovingly by nieces Sandra Kelty-Jeffery and Arleen Washington of Bronx, NY; Tammy Bassfield of Virginia; Lisa McLemore of the District of Columbia; and Angela Adams of Texas. Her nephews include Fletcher Ingram and James Ingram of Blackstone, VA; Reidy Ingram of New Mexico; Richard Ingram of North Carolina; Chris Wright of Virginia; Don Anderson Jr. of Virginia; Eric Anderson of California; Terry Lewis of Virginia; Danny Anderson of Atlanta; and Jerry Anderson of Texas.

Special cousins include Mae Webb, Carrie Epes, and Florence Brown. She also leaves behind many great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
