Obituary for Mary Martha Lively
On January 9th, 2022, God called his daughter Mary Martha Lively home from Labor to Reward.
Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Aunt and Sister, she was met at the gates of heaven by her mother and father Loretta and Titus along with her siters Vernell, Carrie, Thelma, brother TJ and her favorite son-in-law and Alzheimer’s whisperer, Lawrence Green, Sr.
Known as “Aunt Mat” to family and friends, she was born July 8, 1930, in Round O, South Carolina. She was the 3rd oldest of five and worked on the family farm until the age of 16 when she took a leap of faith and moved to New York.
While in New York, Mary led an exciting life including becoming a lead dancer at the legendary Cotton Club. She hung up her dancing shoes to raise her family. Always stressing education to her girls, she took her own advice and at the age of 65 got her GED followed by her Associates Degree in Early Childhood Development at age 70.
Mary leaves behind to a grateful family to cherish and celebrate her life: daughters, Caroline and Rachel Banks; son-in-law Eric Emmanuel; grandsons Lawrence Green, Jr., Steven, Kevin and Corporal Tahlik Banks; great grandchildren, Neveah, Atiyana, August, Taylor, Imani, Harmani, Katiah & Kevin, Jr.; granddaughter in-law, Tamika Johnson. She also leaves a beloved second family the Green-Massenburg-Smith family along with a host of other family and friends. With special regards to the Leggette, Sanders and Pollard families.
Gone from our hands but never from our hearts, she is dancing in heaven now. No more pain or sorrow, watching over us for all our tomorrows.
