Obituary for Mary M. Harris
Mary Magdalene Gallion Harris departed this life on August 27, 2015 at VCU Hospital in Richmond, VA. She was the daughter of the late Sadie and James Gallion.
Mary joined Pleasant Oak Baptist Church at an early age. She was one of the first to be baptized in the indoor baptismal pool. She was educated in the Lunenburg County Public School System.
She met Robert Logan Harris, Sr. in 1953. They were married on December 25, 1955. They relocated to Baltimore, MD shortly afterwards and joined Fountain Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Dennis Barrow. They later became charter members of Ray of Hope Baptist Church in 1978 under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. Charles M. Franklin, Sr . She served faithfully on the deaconess board as well as the hospitality committee.
She retired from the Baltimore City Public School System in 1992. After retiring, Mary and Robert relocated to Blackstone, VA. She was an active member of Pleasant Oak Baptist Church where she served on the hospitality, deaconess and pastor’s aid committees. She also shared in many activities at New Prospect Baptist Church.
Mary loved cooking, shopping, decorating, talking with friends and spending time with family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Otis Gallion.
Mary leaves to celebrate her life a loving and devoted husband, Robert Logan Harris Sr.; one son, Robert Harris, Jr. (Franklinton, NC); a dedicated and loving daughter-in-law, Tara Harris; two grandchildren, Rae and Tomyra Harris; a caring brother, Morris Gallion of Randallstown, MD; four loving sisters-in-law, Ada Gallion (Randallstown, MD), Thelma Gallion (Victoria, VA), Mary White (Portsmouth, VA) and Sara Johnson (Blackstone, VA); two aunts, Mary Louise Johns (Baltimore, MD) and Louise Johns (Blackstone, VA) a devoted friend, Norma White (Randallstown, MD); three godchildren, Rochelle Payne, Stacey and Tracey White of Maryland; and a host of treasured nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral Services Saturday, September 5, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. at Pleasant Oak Baptist Church, Victoria with interment to follow in the Harris Family Cemetery, Blackstone.
