Obituary for Mary Jane Fields
Mary Jane Goode Fields, formerly of Amelia, Virginia departed this life on December 4, 2008 in Washington, D.C. She was born in Amelia County, Virginia on May 16, 1918, the oldest of ten children to the union of the late Joseph and Ida Goode. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, the late Richard Fields; one daughter, Gracie Featherston; one son, George Fields; one sister, Rosabell; three brothers: Timothy, Henry and Garrison.
Mrs. Fields attended school in Amelia County, Virginia and spent most of her life raising her twelve children. Mary or “Jane” as she was affectionally called, loved cooking and her family tasted the love in her food. Jane took great pride in caring for her husband and family.
Left to mourn her death are: six daughters, Murriel Woodson, Josephine Greene, Nancy Premaratne (Prem), Doris Lucas (Ernest), Maryam Shabazz (Naim) and Lorna Branch (Thomas); four sons, Graham Fields (Verna), Richard Fields (Brenda), William Fields and Toney Fields; four sisters, Helen Clinton, Lena Mae Archer, Margaret Davis and Barbara Scott; thirty grandchildren, thirty-five great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Along with great love and affection for her family, she had great love for her community. To know her was to love her. Surely she will be missed by all who came to know and love her. The last ten years of her life she studied the Bible with Jehovah Witness and had attended meetings at the Kingdom Hall until her illness prevented her.
Mary Jane slipped peacefully in eternal rest, leaving pleasant memories to be shared by all.
