Mary Hawthorne Johnson, daughter of the late Polly and Reverend James Hawthorne was born in Nottoway County on January 7, 1940. She departed this life on Friday, September 22, 2017 at her residence.

Mary attended school in Nottoway County. She was employed in housekeeping and food service at Fort Pickett

Mary was married to Edward Johnson, he preceded her in death.

Mary leaves to cherish her memory: her children, Elnora Casper, Susie Johnson and Bernard Johnson; grandchildren, Natelle Johnson, George Johnson, Marquita Johnson, Robert Casper, RaShaun Casper, Susie Edmonds, Kaneshia Rose and Roderick Edmonds; great grandchildren, Jayvaris Johnson, Shyliik Johnson, Nadia Johnson, Jalen Watson, Keyshawn Watson, Kevin Craig, Jaykiyla Craig, Christopher Hernandez, Alfredo Hernandez, Mia Johnson-Lee, Ava Johnson-Lee, Asiaju Casper and Malachi Bowden; sisters, Martha, Lilly, Agnes, Emma, Cora, Polly Ann and Ester; brother, James; devoted friend, Ben Booker; nieces and nephews, Shirley Hawthorne, Kenny Hawthorne, Reverend Kenneth Hawthorne and Kendall Hawthorne; family friends, Dallas Crowder, Maurice Delaney, Christopher Thompson and Roger Truhart; devoted caregiver, Marc Oliver; a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral Services Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Michael W. Hawkes Funeral Home Chapel, Ameia. Interment Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, Blackstone.
