Obituary for Mary Gertrude Monroe
On July 4 (Independence Day) at 1:23pm, while surrounded by her children, Mary Gertrude quietly received her eternal freedom from this world and was ushered into her heavenly home.
She was born on October 12, 1927 to the late Joseph and Estelle Johnson in Amelia County, Virginia. She was the youngest of 4 children and was lovingly referred to as “Gertie” by her family and friends.  She was educated in the Amelia County School system.
She confessed Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Little Union Baptist Church where she remained a member for many years. On August 11, 1944, she was joined in holy matrimony to Mr. Willie Monroe.  From this union, 3 children were born:  Odell, Shirley Elaine, and Tony.  She joined the Chester Grove Baptist Church and joyfully served in many capacities, such as Deaconess, choir member, and Women’s Missionary.  Later she joined the Church of Christ Apostolic Faith and served there as a faithful member until God moved her to continue spreading His word throughout the county.
Gertrude was a very loving and giving person; always putting others above herself.  She cared about everybody’s life and situation and would willingly sacrifice her time and resources to help those in need.  The love for her family and friends was felt in many ways, but one of the most special was through her cooking.  Gertrude could “throw down” in the kitchen. With her mom dying when she was very young, she learned to cook from her husband.  Soon, she became a master in the kitchen and through the years, shared her gift with many people.  Everybody loved her cooking. Gertrude also spent many years taking care of ailing family members until they went home to be with the Lord.  She unselfishly and tirelessly took care of her father, her mother-in-law, and her husband until the very end.
Gertrude’s unwavering and bold faith was exemplified in all aspects of her life.  She lived to serve God and always believed that this world was not her home; that she was just passing through.  Heaven was her goal and she was prepared and ready to take the journey to her new home.
She is preceded in death by her devoted husband, Deacon Willie R. Monroe, her loving daughter, Evangelist Odell V. Johnson, her brother, Joseph E. Johnson, and her sisters, Luvenia Thomas and Mary Alice Gibson.
She leaves to cherish her memory – her children: Shirley Elaine Farmer of Wilson, NC and Tony Monroe of Amelia, VA; two son-in-laws, Pastor Donald V. Johnson, Sr. and Elder Rayfield Farmer; her sister, Laura Carter; six grandchildren, Ardeletta Swann (Tony), Donald Johnson, Jr. (JeVette), Andrea Tobias (Dan), Carol Farmer, Barbara Farmer, and Kyrei Greene; ten great-grandchildren, two sister-in-laws, Sarah Ann Monroe and Frances Monroe, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
